Description

"Tasted at the château as part of a private vertical. The 1996 Pichon-Lalande has always been a marvellous wine and perhaps now it is beginning to even rival the 1982. It has a brilliant,Cabernet-driven bouquet with intense blackberry, cedar and graphite scents that remain resolutely linear - a nose that does not flinch. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins that encase layers of ripe black and red fruit interlaced with white pepper and cedar. This has a little more focus than the great 1995 and will probably last longer, demonstrating greater persistency towards the finish. Excellent. Tasted March 2014".
(96 Points).

Neal Martin. (September 2014).

"A clear garnet core, with deep black rim.It has a glorious nose,blackberry,cedar,sous-bois,smoke,and tar.Very masculine, classic Pauillac really, with great definition. The palate is medium-bodied,very well balanced with good acidity, with blackberry, cedar, citrus fruits, quite attacking and still rather linear with a cedar infused finish.Very good length with a touch of tar on the aftertaste.A long future beckons,so patience is needed. But it will be worth the wait.Anticipated maturity: 2012-2035".
(96 Points).

Robert Parker. (eRobertParker.com December 2008).

"Medium saturated colour.Compellingly beautiful nose.A forest of cedar wood scents combine with sweet, ripe, spicy blackberry and raspberry fruit to seduce you.Equally impressive on the palate;powerful and tannic with good acidity, sweet dark berry fruits and roasted coffee flavors. This is an extremely delicious yet youthful wine in perfect balance. Those fortunate enough to own Pichon-Lalande 1996 should not be in a hurry to open this masterpiece".
(95 Points).

Executive Wine Seminars at which Robert Parker attended the tasting. (eRobertParker.com Tasted, 8/12/2005).

This was a blind tasting in which there were eight of the Bordeaux First Growths and several Super-seconds included from the 1995 and 1996 vintages.Pichon-Lalande 1996 came ahead of the majority of the First Growth wines.

Light nose. Dark crimson. Very full and broad and well balanced and yet with hardly discernible tannin until the very very end. Quite forward but a lovely drink. Nothing out of place. A much better bottle than we saw in the first line-up. Drink 2005-12
Score: 17.5 Jancis Robinson MW. (September 2006).
