Description

Four lots of three bottles each fresh from a previously unopened original wooden case.

Les Carmes Haut Brion is a small 9 hectare estate neighbouring Haut Brion and La Mission Haut Brion in Pessac. Planted with 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc. From 1584 to 1789 it was the property of Carmelite monks: after the Revolution it was in the hands of the French State until the 1890's.

With just 2000 cases produced per vintage Les Carmes will always remain a "confidential" wine, but one well worth discovering at a fraction of their illustrious neighbours...Neal Martin's notes below seem to suggest it has reached its peak, and curiously Christmas seems just around the corner, so a short auction period will allow time to ship and for the bottles to repose in good time...

Tasted at the chateau in Bordeaux. The 1996 has a rather obdurate bouquet with rustic black fruit tinged with cigar box and gravel scents. It is uncomplicated but nicely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with a rather insubstantial opening, but it builds slightly towards a dark cherry, soy and sous-bois-tinged finish. This is still drinking well, though I would not leave it too much longer. Tasted November 2012
