An opportunity for a comparative tasting of 3 bottles of Fox Creek Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon from different vintages,when this winery was producing exceptionally high quality wines,under the auspices of Sparky and Sarah Marquis.1996,1997 and 1998 were vintages at Fox Creek when the Marquis team were in their prime as winemakers at this estate.It was during their era that Fox Creek acquired cult winery status in Australia.Unfortunately,1998 was the Marquis' team last year at Fox Creek and they have since moved on to become winemakers at Mollydooker and it is debatable that the wine produced at Fox Creek has ever since reached the same level of quality.


Robert Parker had a tasting of older Australian wines and his comments on the Fox Creek wines were as follows:-

"I rated these Australian wines highly when they were released and lo and behold they are still spectacular wines that are ageing beautifully.They admirably demonstrate that the Sparky Marquis team (who have since moved on to their own projects) knows a great deal about what they are doing.
Still not fully mature,but very impressive,is the super-concentrated Fox Creek 1996 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve.Classic notes of crème de cassis,tobacco leaf,licorice,and earth are followed by a full-bodied wine,stuffed with rich fruit,glycerin and sweet velvety tannins.Approachable now,and beginning to develop some secondary nuances,it is capable of lasting another 10-15 years".

"Remarkably civilized,even restrained by the standards of Fox Creek,the 1997 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is clearly the product of a lighter vintage.Despite its elegant personality,there is nothing wimpy about this wine.A dark/ruby/purple color is followed by an attractive smoky,black currant and toasty-scented nose.Medium-bodied,with excellent balance,and soft tannin,it should be consumed over the next decade"
(89 Points).


"Fox Creek produces 1,500 cases of Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve annually.This wine is aged in 100% French oak.The brilliant 1998 is opaque black/purple-colored,with an explosive nose of licorice,blackberry,cassis,tar,and new oak.This huge,ripe wine is layered,thick,smoky,and concentrated,a true blockbuster from this superb vintage".
