Description

THREE BOTTLES OF THE ULTIMATE SWEET CHENIN BLANC

In 1997 the Chenin Blanc vineyards along the Layon river south of Angers experienced incredible amounts of noble rot (botrytis) resulting in wines richer and sweeter than had ever been seen before. This also coincided with a moment where several vignerons, dubbed 'the sugar chasers', went to extreme lengths to capture the most intense nectars imaginable. These wines such as as Rene Renou's Cuvee Zenith, Patrick Baudoin's Apres Minuit or Jo Pithon's Cuvee Ambroisie sit well beyond what is considered 'typical' for the Coteaux du Layon region. The scores they achieved are astronomical. These wines are better thought of as TROCKENBEERENAUSLESE or TOKAJI ESSENCIA that happen to be made from Chenin Blanc than regular Coteaux du Layon.

Anthologie par Philippe Delesvaux clocks in with grapes picked at a potential alcohol level of 31.5%. After fermentation stopped at 11% it left 535g per litre of residual sugar. Total production was 2300 500ml bottles.

Published in Issue #124, August 1999 of The Wine Advocate, Pierre Rovani had this to say

"Philippe Delesvaux's 1997s are to Coteaux du Layon what Mr. Universe is to manhood - huge freaks of nature that are both fascinating and unreal. The 1997s may be over-the-top. The 1997 Coteaux du Layon Anthologie contains 535 grams of residual sugar per liter. It is unbelievably syrupy, full-bodied, mouth-coating, stupendously sweet, and crammed with jellied tropical fruits, apricots, as well as spices. The Anthologie offers a tantalizing blood orange candy component and a seemingly unending finish. It is anybody's guess as to how it will cope with cellaring as there is no empirical basis with which to judge the ageworthiness of such an unusual wine with relatively low alcohol and acidity combined with such stratospheric sugar levels. My instincts suggest consumption over the next 5-6 years." 98/100

I asked Philippe Delesvaux directly at the 2008 Salon du Vins in Angers about this 'ageworthiness' challenge. His response was that this wine would last at least 100 years. He said he still had a small amount for sale at €100 each from the cellar door. I have tried the wine twice and it shows absolutely no sign of decline. It is as rich and potent as it ever was.

Further reviews testify to that. Cellar Tracker user Acyso wrote

"Amber in colour. Very reticent nose, with some floral and melon notes. Interestingly enough, also some raspberry and strawberry notes. On the palate this is layered and thick, with tons of complexity. Massive strawberry and floral flavours, with a hint of spice. Unctuous and sweet, but not cloying at all -- there are waves of acidity here to balance things out. A real gem and surprise, this is a simply brilliant wine. Hold for the long haul, this is going to outlast anyone reading this." 95/100 (March 5 2012)

While John Kapon of US auction house Acker, Merrall & Condit wrote

"This Delesvaux had an incredible nose of thick, apricot syrup, peaches as well, and oil, nut and Loire minerality. It was so sweet and rich in the nose and on the palate and possessed amazing strawberry flavors despite being a white. The texture was motor oil, the acidity ridiculously long, and the sugar levels so rich and extraordinary that this wine is a good bet for 100 years of aging potential. Have your children's children bet on it" 96/100

So the bottom line: this is an all out insane wine the like of which has never been made in the Loire since as the sugar chasers found little market for these nectars. Pithon, Baudouin and Delesvaux continue to make wine but concentrate on dry styles these days (a few noble rot exceptions slip out but at lower levels of concentration). Anybody who loves great sweet wines needs to add this to their cellar to sit alongside the greatest examples of Sauternes, Tokaji or TBA Riesling.
