Description

A huge,powerfully tannic,backward wine that will require considerable patience,Certan de May's 1998 is a worthy rival to the still youthful,unevolved 1982.The color is dense purple.This wine was not easy to evaluate,but as it sat in the glass,its thickness and impressive credentials became obvious,Sweet cherry liqueur,kirsch,dried herbs,cedar and toasty oak gradually emerge from the wine's restrained aromatics.The palate is inundated with exceptional concentration,ferocious tannin,and high levels of extract.This is one of the most backward wines of the vintage,but it appears to possess the intense concentration needed to match the tannin. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2025.

I tasted a bottle of this wine in 2011 (having decanted it for 2 hours) to check its progress and the tannin situation.My tasting notes were:-

"Still a deep purple.An attractive musky perfume,lead pencils,cedar,violets,blackcurrants,minerality and a hint of seaweed.Beautifully balanced palate,plenty of glycerin and extract...liquorice,plums,black fruits.Good symmetry and tannins now well integrated".
(92 Points).
