Description

The year 1998 in Chateauneuf du Pape was considered by both Robert Parker and Michael Broadbent to be a legendary, benchmark vintage:-

"When I reported in these wines in "The Wine Advocate" (twelve months after the vintage),I indicated that it was the finest vintage since 1990.However,it is even better than 1990,producing wines with extraordinary balance".
"Multiple tastings of the 1998 Chateauneuf du Papes out of bottle have proven that these wines have gained amazing weight and richness, surpassing even their pre-bottling conditions. This is a profound, possibly once-in-a-lifetime vintage to buy in quantity. Moreover, these wines will drink young or can be cellared 15-20+ years".

Robert Parker. (Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide. Sixth Edition).

"Michael Broadbent awarded ***** (Five Stars) to the 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape vintage:-

"Uniformly good growing season. The summer was hot and dry,a touch of rain, then intense heat in August, stressing the vines.Sun-tanned skins produced deeply colored reds and a high sugar content, with substantial levels of alcohol".

Michael Broadbent. (Michael Broadbent's Vintage Wine).

"The deep ruby-colored 1998 Chante-Perdrix Chateauneuf du Pape is even more expressive,revealing notes of seaweed,intermixed with pepper,olives,leather,and black cherry/cassis fruit.It has intense flavors,medium to full-body,abundant glycerin,and a soft finish".(Written approx.2000).
(89 Points).

Robert Parker, (Parker's Wine Buyer's Guide).

A couple of more recent tasting notes on CellarTracker:-

"Mature, light red approaching amber.Fully mature, slight brett nose, which I enjoy (not for those who are sensitive).Nice secondary aromas of game and herbs.Wonderful bottle, last one from my twin's birth year (too bad for them!).Wouldn't hold for many more years, but no need to drink right away, not sensing improvements as evolution continues - maybe five to seven years left?".
(90 Points).

CellarTracker. (26/11/2012).

"Good ruby red, almost translucent, with a watery rim and a good bit of bricking.Nose is open and enticing upon pop and pour with no decant although a two hour decant would have been the thing to do.The tannins are well integrated with lots of garrigue, licorice, and sweet, dark, red fruits.Excellent mineral quality with nice meatiness.Nice finish and drinking quite well. This should last another few years at minimum. This is in that stage of development where a wine is just sheer joy to experience".
(91 Points).

CellarTracker. (23/4/2011).
