Description

This is one of the best run estates in Chateauneuf du Pape,making top flight,modern-style,concentrated,character-filled wines.However,I don't think anyone will confuse the elegant,lighter-weight 1999s with the sensational 1998s produced by the amiable Gonnet brothers.The extraordinary 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet (I have already consumed two bottles from my stash) is one of the vintage's blockbusters.The saturated ruby/purple color is accompanied by aromas of crème de cassis,licorice,lavender,and spice.The wine is unctuously textured,with great richness,huge levels of glycerin,extraordinary purity and a finish that lasts nearly 40 seconds.This is a sexy,disarmingly enjoyable Chateauneuf du Pape that will get even better over the next decade and last for 15-18 years.It is hard to resist because of its ultra ripeness and intensity,but those with discipline should hold onto a few bottles for 1-2 years and drink them over the next 10-15.
