Description

In the mid to late nineties,Sarah and Sparky Marquis built up the reputation of the Fox Creek winery to cult status. After 1998,they moved on to start their own Mollydooker winery and it is debatable whether Fox Creek have ever since kept up their high standard of wine making.

In a revue of older top Australian wines in June 2009,Robert Parker rated the 1998 Fox Creek Shiraz wines extremely highly.Despite a similar points rating of these two wines by Robert Parker (see below),my view is that the 1998 Reserve Shiraz has more weight on the mid-palate and is probably the best wine that this winery has ever produced.

Topterroir.

"I rated these wines highly when they were first produced, and lo and behold they are still spectacular wines that are aging beautifully. They admirably demonstrate that the Marquis team know a great deal about what they are doing. The three vintages (1996/1997/1998) of the Reserve Shiraz were all sensational. The 1998 Reserve Shiraz has the most potential of this trio.It combines some of the mature elements of the 1997 with the massive richness of the 1996,but without the 1996's slightly rustic framework.A dense purple color is followed by a sensational bouquet of crème de cassis, charcoal, and incense.Full-bodied,opulent,and voluptuously textured, this is a big,but incredibly well-balanced wine. Its fruit-bomb personality of a decade ago,has morphed into something far more civilized, delineated, and refined. This gorgeous offering is a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.Enjoy it over the next 10-15+ years".
(96 Points).

Robert Parker. (The Wine Advocate. #183. June 2009).

"Readers looking for superintense, ripe wines will be thrilled by the 1998 Fox Creek Shiraz/Cabernet JSM.Opaque,purple-colored,with a sumptuous nose of black fruits and spicy new oak,it is explosive on the palate. With an unctuous texture,a full-bodied personality, and intense black cherry/cassis flavors, this is a sensationally layered effort with a 45 second finish. This kind of wine can only be produced in selected areas of California and Australia. It is the antithesis of the polite, restrained, austere style of Bordeaux wines for which France is so famous.Look for it to drink young, yet drink for 15-20 years".
(96 Points).
