Description

1998 was the last year that Sarah and Sparky Marquis were in charge of wine production at this vineyard and it is generally considered their best.They then moved on to oversee production at Mollydooker.At Fox Creek,they built up the winery's reputation to cult status;however,since they have left it,it is debatable whether the quality of Fox creek wines have ever since achieved Sparky's high standards.The 1998 Fox Creek Reserve Shiraz is considered the greatest wine that this vineyard has produced and the quality of the 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Shiraz is not far behind.


"I rated these wines highly when they were first released and,lo and behold,they are still spectacular wines that are aging beautifully.They admirably demonstrate that the Marquis team knows a great deal about what they are doing.The three vintages (1996/97/98) of the Reserve Shiraz were all sensational.The 1998 Reserve Shiraz has the most potential of this trio.It combines some of the mature elements of the 1997 with the massive richness of the 1996,but without the 1996's slightly rustic framework.A dense purple color is followed by a sensational bouquet of crème de cassis,charcoal,and incense.Full-bodied,opulent,and voluptuously textured,this is a big but incredibly well-balanced wine.Its fruit-bomb personality of a decade ago has morphed into something far more civilized,delineated,and refined.This gorgeous offering is a superb example of McLaren Vale Shiraz.Enjoy it over the next 10-15+ years".
