Description

This wine was made by one of my favorite Australian winemakers,Rolf Binder.The 1998 Shiraz/Mouvedre Black Sock emerges from 60-100-year-old vines and is composed of 80% Shiraz and 20% Mouvedre.It is aged a whopping 30 months in American wood.Production is small,around 150 cases annually.The prodigious 1998 is a blockbuster.This opaque purple-colored wine offers an almost essence of blackberry and cherry fruit,intertwined with earth,leather,charcoal and new wood.The wine is full-bodied,spectacularly concentrated,with multiple levels to its mid-palate,and a whoppingly powerful,rich finish.I was surprised to learn that the wine is only 13.5% alcohol,given the huge swath it cuts across the palate.Anticipated maturity:now-2018.

1998 was the last year that the Black Sock was made with 80% Shiraz and 20% Mourvedre and thus bottles are becoming increasingly rare,because of the very small production of 150 cases.According to Winesearcher,there is only one retailer currently selling bottles in the world at £55 plus taxes.
The reason is that the present-day Black Sock (made of 90% Mouvedre)which started production in 2003 by all accounts does not come up to the quality of this magnificent Shiraz dominated 1998 Black Sock.
