Description

I am auctioning 2 great bottles of San Giusto A Rentennano Percarlo Toscano Rosso 1998. The wine was bought from a UK wine merchant upon release and has been stored in a Eurocave since that time.

From their website:

Percarlo is made from 100% estate grown Sangiovese grapes, especially selected bunch per bunch, from the best zones of our vineyards, which have a low yield of 1 Kg grapes per vine.

The grapes are usually allowed to mature beyond the normal degree of ripeness. Fermentation and maceration take place in enameled cement vats and last up to 35 days. The yeasts produced are natural. Percarlo is aged in French oak barriques for 20-22 months, bottled unfiltered and held in bottle for another 18 months before being released. The grapes which go into the making of Percarlo are selected, bunch per bunch, from vineyards whose soil dates predominately to the Pliocene epoch.

It is composed of layers of sand and stones which lie 2 to 5 meters deep and rest on beds of clay. The vineyards are situated at an average altitude of 270 meters above sea level. Notwithstanding the variations from year to year which occur in every wine faithful to its terroir, each vintage of Percarlo possesses constant characteristics which give it a precise, recognizeable identity.

It is a wine with long ageing potential, a robust expression of the San Giusto a Rentennano terroir.

This is the estate's website:

http://www.fattoriasangiusto.it/eng/index.php

The level is into the neck. The label of one bottle is in lovely condition while the second has a couple of nicks in it and a mark from the shelf in the eurocave.

I am content to ship this wine to European bidders, but would ask that you e-mail me to agree the shipping cost before bidding.

STEVEHYDE WROTE:
Wednesday, February 08, 2006 - How can this be my last bottle!?? I tend to think of the 98s from Tuscany as a more accessible, early drinking vintage. I should have known better. Drunk this bottle over the course of two evenings. Removed it from the cellar last night, late-ish. On opening it was a dark purple throughout. Very dense. It was still a bit cool when I poured the first glass, and it wasn't giving up much. A plush but not structured mouth feel, reticent nose. not much coming through. I corked the bottle and put it in the fridge. After an hour or so, the wine began to emerge from its shell. Beautiful tanins, much more structure, a hint of red and black fruits, leather, smoke, clove and bramble, wet stones.

Second evening, I pulled this from the fridge at about 6 to let it warm up. Poured about 8. Beautiful smokey nose of black fruits, bramble, sous-bois, but with sweet, pure red fruits in the mouth and on the finish. Fabulous balance of acid and tanin and fruit.

This wine is drinking beautifully now with a few hours of air, but will be much better in 3-5 years. Another strong showing for Percarlo.
