Description

1999 is a year that rivals 1997 as one of Tuscany's greatest vintages.
For 25 years this has been one of my favorite Tuscan producers.Amazingly,this 90-acre estate has been in the Di Napoli family for 300 years.Elegance,balance,and restraint are the operative words,when it comes to understanding the wines of Castello dei Rampolla.
For more than two decades,one of the greatest Tuscan proprietary red wines has been Castello dei Rampolla's Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese blend called Sammarco.
However the monumental 1999 Vigna d'Alceo (a cuvee of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese aged in oak) tastes like a Sammarco on steroids.The essence of both varietals,it boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals,graphite,plums,creme de cassis and cherry liqueur.It is fabulously concentrated,yet remarkably light on its feet,with medium to full body,sweet tannin,and layer upon layer of flavor nuances.There is plenty of glycerin in this rich,but neither heavy nor overbearing effort.This is a thrilling tour de force! However it requires cellaring.Anticipated maturity:2005-2025.Bravo!
