Description

The lot consists of two bottles of Chianti Classico Riserva from the exceptional 1999 vintage:-

One bottle of 1999 Castello di Bossi "Berardo" Chianti Classico Riserva.
One bottle of 1999 Castello di Verrazzano Chianti Classico Riserva.

Both these 1999 Chianti Classico Riservas were awarded ***** (Five Stars) by Decanter Magazine:-

"Attractive fruit, with aromas of black fruit and forest fruit.Big tannic structure, complex and rich, good fruit complexity, great length".

***** Decanter Magazine (Tasting note on the 1999 Castello di Bossi "Berardo").

"An aroma of fresh earth and mushrooms leads to a big, elegant mouthful of black fruit and tobacco".

***** Decanter Magazine (Tasting note on the 1999 Castello di Verrazzano. August 2003).

"Though present in the warmer, southern portions on Chianti Classico, limestone is unique to Verrazzano in the cooler climate of the northern part of the zone. This singular combination of limestone soil and cooler growing conditions accounts for the muscarlarity and finesse of Verrazzano wines.
Under Luigi Cappellini's (the proprietor) direction,a careful method of yield reduction has been implemented,in which selected bunches of grapes are cut back and discarded during the growing season, resulting in heightened concentration of flavour in the remaining fruit and increasingly high quality wines.Harvest is conducted entirely by hand".

Decanter Magazine. (Recent article on the Castello di Verrazzano vineyard. April 2016).

"A fundamental rule with respect to Tuscan wines is to buy all the 1997s and 1999s you can afford. Both are extraordinary vintages of ripeness and richness that should surpass the finest wines produced in such great years as 1990 and 1985.Both are consistently superb vintages throughout Tuscany's viticultural regions".
"1999 is a year that rivals 1997 as one of Tuscany's greatest vintages.Consistency is the operative word, from humble Chiantis to the majestic proprietary red blends and Brunello di Montalcinos. The wines are extremely ripe, with low acidity as well as freshness and delineation atypical for wines of such size and richness.Readers who love Italian wines, particularly those from Tuscany, should be stockpiling the 1999s".
