Description

Three bottles offered individually from a previously unopened case of 12 which until very recently was cellared by the Wine Society under optimum conditions.

Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a St-Julien property that today is one of the leading Super Seconds. It is owned by the Borie family and is situated in the south-east of the St-Julien appellation. Ducru-Beaucaillou's 50 hectares of vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 65%, Merlot 25%, Cabernet Franc 5% and Petit Verdot 5%) lie on deep, large-stone gravel beds enriched with alluvial soil deposits and with a high clay content. The wines are matured in oak barriques (50-60% new) for 18 months.

For many, Ducru-Beaucaillou is the quintessential St-Julien - deep-coloured, powerful, ripe, exquisitely well-balanced and perfectly harmonious. It requires a minimum of 10 years of bottle ageing before it should be approached and the best vintages will continue improving for many more years. Ducru-Beaucaillou is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé.

Apr 2002 Robert Parker 91 Drink: 2004 - 2018
The deep purple-colored 1999 Ducru Beaucaillou, which represents 60% of the crop, offers aromas of crushed stones, raspberry liqueur, and black currants. This sweet, pure, and harmonious wine possesses elegance, finesse, and multiple nuances rather than power, concentration, and structure. This is Bordeaux at its finest. Anticipated maturity: 2004-2018.

Wine Advocate #128 Apr 2000 Robert Parker (90-92) Drink: 2003 - 2020
Ducru-Beaucaillou is always elegant and complex. The 1999 exhibits an evolved character. This property has been making superb wines since the mid-nineties, and the 1999 is a complete, open-knit offering that depends more on its finesse, multiple aromatic dimensions, and sheer delicacy than power. Ripe, medium to full-bodied, with excellent density, sweet tannin, and delicious symmetry, it will undoubtedly close down after bottling, and require 3-4 years of cellaring. It will keep for two decades.

Wonderful, inviting, still dense nose with perfect development. Black fruit, violets, almost perfumed. Classic cedary oak. Good depth. Lingering hints of sweet tobacco and leather. Very impressive fruit.
Medium-fullish body. Splendid balance. Good concentration and very well structured. Wonderful combo between cedar, perfume and plum fruit. Fat fruit and good grip. Very generous for the vintage and in perfect drinking window.

A lovely wine, which is just entering a drinking plateau. Nose gets a beguiling sweet-cherry-taste with air, the palate is full of sweet ripe fruits, juicy, seamless, with charming velvet texture. Tannins still present in the firm finish, but very stylish and refreshing. Beautiful colour.
I would drink this from 2014-2025+. Don't worry about ageing, I am still drinking lots of DB from the 70s (esp 70 and 75) and they are all gorgeous. 93+
