Description

Allen Meadows Burghound 91

1999 750 ml Pommard "Grand Clos des Epenots" 1er Cru Red Producer note: The young Yves Confuron has been at Domaine de Courcel since 1996 and during that time, the wines have gone from strength to strength, culminating in these superb examples. He reports that the Domaine's overall yields in 1999 were 38 hl/ha and sugars were so high that there was virtually no need for chaptalization; in fact, the Grand Clos des Epenots was harvested at a potential alcohol level of 14%. The methods here are designed to create wines that will age for many years yet reflect well their respective terroirs. The grapes are harvested late and there is no destemming. Bunches are transferred whole into the fermentation vats, given 4 to 5 days of cold macerations with no yeast additions and the cuvaisons were on the longish side in 99, lasting a full 35 days. The élevage usually lasts 18 to 20 months in 25 to 30% new oak and since 1996, there has been no fining or filtration and none is expected in 99. All of these wines were tasted on my February visit. Tasting note: Almost opaque with very intense black fruit and extremely dense yet elegant medium weight flavors. Quite structured and firm, even backwards at this point but with terrific potential. The old vines character is very apparent and the length is outstanding. This is a huge wine with big tannins yet everything is in balance and this should age for a long time. Tasted: Apr 01, 2002 Score: 91 Drink: 2009-18 - Comments: Outstanding Issue 6

1999 Domaine de Courcel Pommard Grand Clos des Epenots Saturated deep red-ruby color. Highly aromatic nose combines maraschino cherry, redcurrant, roast coffee and sweet oak scents; at once roasted and sappy. Superripe, highly concentrated and thick; an uncanny combination of velvety texture and excellent vinosity. This essence of Pommard offers great mouthcoating volume and outstanding persistence on the palate. Dusty, fine tannins saturate the palate. Certainly one of the Cote de Beaune stars of the vintage. 93
