Description

Bordering St. Vincent's Gulf, 40kms south of Adelaide, the Kay Brothers McLaren Vale Amery Vineyards grace the rolling foothills of the Southern Mt. Lofty Ranges. Established in 1890 by Australian born brothers, Herbert and Frederick Kay, the Heritage listed Kays Amery Winery celebrated its first grape crush in 1895 and is the oldest McLaren Vale winery still in founding family hands with third generation Colin Kay continuing the family winemaking tradition. The climate is temperate with a cool moist winter and warm dry summer. Proximity to the sea ensures that frost, which is a debilitating agent in many viticultural areas, is virtually unknown. The vineyard receives a rainfall of approximately 550mm year and excellent vines are grown on a wide range of soils, the predominant being ironstone gravel.

The Hillside vineyard was initially planted in 1892 and in 1992 a systematic replanting of the eastern hillside commenced using cuttings taken from the 100 year old Block 6 Shiraz vines. Sitting on an Easterly facing slope directly above the famed Block 6 vineyard, Hillside Shiraz shares the complex geology, cooling summer breezes and warm summer sun of its more famous sibling. Developing intense flavours, balanced structure and good palate weight that McLaren Vale is famous for, the Hillside Shiraz is a classic example of full bodied McLaren Vale Shiraz.

James Halliday 90/100

jalfrezi and various sides in between. Interestingly the wine complemented them all with enough structure and flavour to not be overpowered. Went very well with the brijal curry as the aubergine gives it a deep and smoeky flavour. If indian food came calling I would whip another one of these out in a flash.
The food also softened the alcohol on this which was something I felt previously was a bit to much. I still think this needs a bit of time to soften but this was a great experience.
I'm getting through these quicker than I thought, and given I think it will only benefit with time I should probably pick some more up!
