Description

Biondi-Santi’s outstanding Brunellos are best-known for their incredible ability to age. Even a 100-year-old Brunello di Montalcino from Biondi-Santi shows remarkably well.
The wine is made exclusively from Sangiovese grapes grown on the slopes around Montalcino.
Sangiovese (or Nielluccio in Corsica), a dark-berried vine, is the most widely planted grape variety in Italy. Virtually synonymous with the red wines of Tuscany, and all the romanticism that goes with the territory, Sangiovese is the core constituent in some of the great names in Italian wine. Italy’s love affair with Sangiovese – and indeed the world’s – is generations old, though recent grapevine research suggests the variety is not as ancient as once thought.

ANALYSIS: a great nose: pepper, liquorice, cinnamon, clove, strawberry, cherry, plum, fruit in alcohol, violet, underwood, coffee, chocolate and tobacco. This bouquet is a sort of a nice surprise which really never stops to astonish the wine-taster.

“Biondi-Santi’s 2000 Brunello di Montalcino Annata is a much more expressive, generous wine than the 2001. In 2000 there is no Riserva and the best fruit was used for the Annata. Medium-red in color, it opens with a very pretty floral nose followed by a delicate core of sweet fruit with enough fatness to fill out its structured frame, providing exquisite balance. A lively note of acidity frames the long finish. A lovely effort. “ (Antonio Galloni, Wine Advocate 91 points)
