Description

Produced from 140-year-old dry-grown,low-yielding vines and named in memory of Jeanneret co-founder Denis Jeanneret,a Swiss national, who finally settled in Australia in 1983.Hand-picked grapes are open-fermented and basket-pressed,before spending 24 months in American oak.Only 180 cases of this wine are produced and it is almost impossible to find retailing in the UK.
I tasted the wine in barrel with Ben Jeanneret (the proprietor)and was most impressed and duly imported some cases direct from the Clare Valley. At the time,Ben recommended cellaring the wine for 10+ years in order for it to develop its full potential.

Tasted in March 2012:-

"Still has a deep, full, purple colour.A spicy nose of plums, blackberries, menthol, melted tar, liquorice, malt, herbs, and aniseed. On the palate...seamless,intense,soft,spicy blackcurrant fruit, elegance (almost finesse,no doubt a product of the old vines),good length and symmetry, wonderful harmony of fruit, spice and powdery tannins.Because of the cooler climate, not as big a wine as some of the huge, blockbuster Barossa Valley Shirazes, but unusually for an Australian red showing elegance and length, and still an extremely satisfying experience.Give it 30 minutes of breathing and it is a terrific wine for drinking now".
(94-95 Points).

Topterroir (March 2012).

"Medium red-purple;the bouquet has a range of earthy, savoury, herbal and spice aromas;the palate has entirely unexpected length and intensity.Once again a wine that shows that old vines do not necessarily produce blockbuster fruit. Best drinking: 2005-2015".

James Halliday. (The Australian Wine Companion. 2004).
