Description

95 points - Neal Martin, The Wine Advocate
“The 2001 Vina Tondonia Reserva is bridled with a lovely nose of decayed red fruit, fireside hearth, a touch of mulberry and small red cherry. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, crisp red fruits (wild strawberry and cranberry) with a sharp, vibrant, tense, tannic finish that has immense precision. There is a slight saline note lingering in the mouth after the wine has (regretfully) departed. Drink now-2030+”

"A beautifully taut, complex, taut, traditionally styled Rioja with notes of spice, earth, herbs, minerals and subtle oak notes. Fresh with some cherry fruit, but the dominant character is non-fruit complexity: warm, spicy, evolved, grippy, sweetly aromatic with real potential for development."
92 points - Jamie Goode, wineanorak.com

"Rioja, 13% abv, Cork. Quite subdued, some creamy and earthy berries, but not exuberant. Nice little gamy notes have developed. The palate has a cherry and orange freshness, with a cool character and very nice balance, though perhaps the fruit could sing a little more, it has lovely elegance and length and will probably age extremely well.
Summer Berrys 2011."

CHARACTERISTICS OF THE VINTAGE:
Recorded by The Regulating Council as Excellent. We harvested 892.065 kilos. There was a frost on April 15th that with only 1 degree below cero damaged around 40 to 50% of the production in Viña Cubillo but not in Viña Bosconia neither in Viña Tondonia. In relation to the quality it was extraordinary due to the very dry summer that stopped any problem with fungus. The grapes arrived to the winery in very healthy conditions. We started harvesting the white grapes on Monday October the 8th and with the read grapes on the 15th which is the average date for harvesting in Rioja Alta.

The harvest took place with very good weather lasting 21 days and we finished on October the 29th.

The grapes showed a good maturation of the fruit and even a bit higher than the average for Rioja Alta. These wines have become of a great balance and will be able to bottle aged improving even more.

COLOUR: Vibrant red leading slightly towards amber.

NOSE: Light fresh texture with notes of vanilla and dried berry aromas.

"Viña Tondonia, located in the heart of the Rioja Alta region, is one of the most famous names in all of Spain, its reputation built on a superb terroir of alluvial clay and limestone and a gentle sloping aspect close to the Ebro River. The superlative 2001 vintage has yielded a Reserva of huge charm, wonderful complexity and un-nerving potential.

The wine is made from three quarters Tempranillo with the balance shared evenly between Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo. It has been aged for 6 years in American oak, with racking taking place twice every year. A traditional Rioja par excellence, the 2001, marries fruit and spice, charcuterie, vanillin and earthy richness; a cornucopia of quality in other words and one which will continue to get better and better." - Simon Field MW
