Description

A rare chance to taste and compare a bottle of each of these highly rated red Chateauneuf du Pape wines from the notable 2003 vintage.

Decanter Magazine described the red Rhone 2003 vintage as “wines with high but ripe tannins meant for laying down”, and scored it 4 out of 5:

“Summer 2003 was one long, hot event. The Southern Rhone’s vineyards stood the heat well. The water table was high after the deluges of autumn 2002 so areas with clay subsoil were fine. More draining soils suffered, but often can be irrigated up till mid-August. Old vines – deeper root systems – fared better than young ones.

At Châteauneuf, La Nerthe started cropping the reds on 23 August, Vieux Télégraphe 25 August. These are extraordinarily early dates. In the best cases, this meant incredible concentration. Everyone talks of a healthy harvest, not a trace of rot.”

Owned by the Perrin family, Beaucastel can be traced back to 1549 and is one of the leading domaines in the area as well as one of the few properties to include all 13 permitted varieties in Chateauneuf du Pape. It has a unique signature style that has earned respect from the wine world at large. The wines have elegance, poise, plenty of earthy terroir notes and are capable of extended ageing.

Some tasting notes from critics:

"The 2003 Beaucastel Chateauneuf du Pape turned out as well as I could have hoped and is certainly an outstanding wine, deep ruby/purple with a tight but promising nose of black fruits, loamy, earthy notes intermixed with pepper, smoke, liquorice, and dried herbs. The wine ..... has full bodied, moderately high, slightly rustic tannins, but big-impact flavours with plenty of texture, density, and purity. Give this wine 3-5 years of bottle age, and drink it over the following 20 years."

Score: 92+ Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (163), February 2006

"Young and tight, with garrigue and roasted game aromas peeking out from a core of ripe black currant, plum and fig fruit. Lots of toast tobacco and iron as well. The finish is well endowed with tannins, but they are ripe and pure. Best from 2008 through 2025. 15,000 cases made."

Score: 94 James Molesworth, WineSpectator.com, May 2006

"Deep, dense red colour. Vibrant aromas of aromas of cherry, wild herbs, fresh flowers and minerals. Energetic and sweet, showing no overripe qualities; offers a silky, suave texture and wonderfully pure red berry, fresh plum, kirsch and fig flavors. Those with an aversion to the funky, gamey character that can characterize Beaucastel in "typical" vintages owe it to themselves to check this out. Clearly, the Perrins know what to do with grenache, even if it's not their favourite grape."

Score: 93 Josh Raynolds, International Wine Cellar, January 2006

The Brunier family has run Vieux Télégraphe since 1891. The estate's vineyards, 60 years old on average, are planted on the celebrated plateau of La Crau, renowned for grape growing in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This terroir gives the wines a distinctive minerality.

"The 2003 Vieux Telegraphe Chateauneuf du Pape has turned out well. Deep ruby with some purple nuances, this wine is medium to full-bodied and reveals notes of liquorice, pepper, Asian spices, black cherry, raspberry, and currant, as well as a relatively big, sweet palate impression with moderate tannin in the finish. It is accessible, but will benefit from 2-3 years of aging. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.”

Score: 92 Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (163), February 2006.

From Cellartracker:

“8/10/2019 - 92 Points
Gorgeous- bright vibrant fruit and lots of depth. Going strong at 16 years!"

"8/4/2019 - 91 Points
A nose full of cherry, leather a little cherry cough drop. Flavours are mellow, dried cherry, moderate tannin, chocolate and thyme notes. Drink any time.”
