Description

The Vega Sicilia estate is in the "Valbuena de Duero", south of the river. A hot, continental climate is tempered by the Atlantic ocean and the Duero River, whose mists create humidity. Of the 1,000 hectares, 240 are under vine on a clay-limestone soil.

Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 and has long been Spain's most prestigious estate. Valbuena is the so-called 'Second Wine' - it is made in years which are not considered powerful enough to make Unico, the flagship wine (which is given around 6 years in oak)

The 5° indicates that this wine has been aged for five years prior to release. The wine is composed mostly of Tempranillo, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

"The 2003 Valbuena is purple-colored and super-fragrant with aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, black currant, and blackberry liqueur. This is followed by a powerful, concentrated wine with an opulent palate-feel, layers of flavor, and beautiful integration of oak, tannin, and acidity, no mean feat in the torrid 2003 vintage. Supple, sweet, and long, this superb effort will evolve for another 4-6 years and drink well through 2025."(94 Points, Jay S Miller, Wine Advocate #175 Feb 2008)
