Description

The Wine Society-Attractive garnet colour with a very lovely mature nose of cassis and mocha coffee. Sweet, dark fruit character on the palate, this is a top-drawer Cru Bourgeois that is at its peak of drinkability. Fresh and balanced traditional claret that will repay decanting 30 minutes before drinking to enjoy at its best.

Chateau Malescasse
This property is one of a clutch of Cru Bourgeois châteaux which has made huge strides in quality in recent years.

The neo-classical château at Malescasse dates from 1824 and over the next 170 years or so its fortunes ebbed and flowed until the house and its vineyards were acquired by Guy Tesseron, scion of a famous Cognac house and owner of châteaux Pontet-canet and Lafon-Rochet, in 1970. He invested a great deal in restoring the fabric and the reputation of the estate and built it back up to its original 40 hectares. After a brief period in the hands of a telecommunications group it was bought by private health care entrepreneur Philippe Austruy, already owner and renovator of Provencal property Commanderie de Peyrassol, who saw great potential at Malescasse even after the ministrations of the Tesserons. He quickly set about refurbishing the cellars, vineyards and house and brought in renowned Bordeaux consultant Stéphane Derononcourt to advise.

The vineyard surrounding the château is situated on one of the best gravelly hilltops to be found between Margaux and St-Julien.

The deep, chalky soils of Château Malescasse produce Cabernet dominated clarets of real intensity and power. The 2004 is just reaching its apogee - lovely dense cassis fruit, wrapped in subtle oak and with firm tannins, almost Pauillac in style. Showing currants and hints of dried flowers on the nose, this medium-bodied claret has velvety tannins and a smooth finish. A great partner to confit shoulder of lamb with roasted rosemary root vegetables.

Bordeaux Vintage 2004

The finest wines of the 2004 vintage display the classic attributes of good claret: fragrant aroma and the harmonious, well-balanced flavour that comes from fresh and well-ripened fruit. These wines will be a great pleasure to drink now and in some cases over the next 25 years or so.

After two successive harvests of relatively small volumes the vines in 2004 wanted to produce a large crop and might have been assisted in this by a slightly warmer than average season, despite a damper August than is the norm. The key to making good wines was therefore to take drastic measures in the vineyard to limit yields so that the grapes would ripen perfectly and evenly.

Vineyards on the best terroir, particularly those where the grapes ripen earlier, were at an advantage. If this advantage was complemented by fastidiousness and an up-to date approach in the vineyards then so much the better. Consequently the top names all performed particularly well, but those who took such pains in less-exalted appellations were also star performers.

The evolution of the wines to date has been fascinating. Though the wines of the vintage may lack the concentration of a top year the better examples have often shown an ability to age very well, perhaps a little better than original expectations, and will continue to do so.
