Wine of the Year 2013 (Wine Spectator)

95/100 Wine Spectator Magazine
93/100 Stephen Tanzer

Maria Urrutia, Marketing Director at Cune, says that “previous generations have left an amazing legacy and we are very happy and excited to be able to keep the high quality of our wines and receive a recognition for our hard work. It has come as a surprise to us and we are over the moon. This distinction is not only good for Cune but for the region of Rioja and Spain as well. It positions Rioja in the map.
“What sets us apart from our competitors is our willpower. We have kept Cune Rioja Imperial Gran Reserva 2004 in the cellar for almost 10 years before releasing it. Not many wine companies have the willpower to do that but we deal with the process of wine making in a very traditional way.”
Cune Imperial was conceived in the 1920s and quick became one of the finest Spanish wines. Its name comes from the Imperial Pint, the special bottling used for the English market.
According to Maria Urrutia, “Cune Imperial represents all Rioja wines combining fruit, wood and the quality of the soil.”
To maintain the high quality and reputation of Cune Imperial, it is only produced when the region of Rioja Alta has exceptional harvests.

This wine is aged in bottle before release, the 2004 only becoming available in 2013.

The cepage of this wine is dominated by Tempranillo, however small percentages of Graciano and Mazuelo are added to give the wine an extra level of complexity and character. The ageing takes place in new French and American oak and lasts for 24 months.
Aromas of spice-box, coffee grounds, black cherry & damsons are both harmonious & rich, whilst the palate is medium-full bodied & can only be described as voluptuous and concentrated. It is just starting to drink nicely now and will continue to be a sure thing until 2024.

4/5/2014 - DF1962 LIKES THIS WINE: 93 Points
Opened two hours before serving as part of 2004 Rioja Reserva and Gran Reserva tasting.
Dense purple garnet almost opaque with garnet rim. Bright red fruits with elegant floral nose. Medium weight with super smooth tannins with a touch of grip on the end. Cassis blackberry and orange peel. Zippy espresso finish. Super elegant. Wine of the night.

3/17/2014 - JOHNH1001 WROTE: 92 Points
Tasted over two days. Lots of oak, cedar and dark fruit on the nose and palate. Dense and creamy. Nice depth and great balance already. Powerful yet not over done. Medium finish.

2/11/2014 - DRON_AP WROTE: 93 Points
Amazingly balanced wine where no single dimension dominates. Some dark fruits and earth on the nose. Medium body with elegantly integrated tannins. Nice but not showing off acidity. Long but not aggressive finish. Great wine though not for those who like Parker and power.

1/30/2014 - D&LWINE LIKES THIS WINE: 92 Points
First taste via Coravin. Very dark, but showing a hint of browning as would be expected with a 10-year-old wine. Dense nose of fruit and mineral, someone said fresh asphalt, and I get that with graphite or pencil lead. Rich, dense and thick. Balanced, I think, with a long finish. Might be even better with decanting. I don't drink enough Rioja to know how this compares or whether it should be the No. 1 Wine of 2013, but I like it and am glad I have 6 bottles!

1/3/2014 - HKM520240 WROTE: 94 Points
Spanish Wine Dinner (Ola Cocina Del Mar, Marina Bay Financial Centre): I was quite excited to try this, after it was named "Wine of the Year" by WS in 2013 and I was not disappointed.
Dark ruby with purple crimson hue, very youthful appearance for a 10 years old wine. Expressive fruity nose, with dominance toasted vanilla oak, along with black and red fruits, blackberry and spice box.
Full and rich on entry, bright acidity gives a fresh mouth-feel, dark cherry, blackberry and powerful but integrating oak. This is lovely, intense yet elegant. Long aftertaste extend by lively acidity. This is a young and robust wine, utterly delicious at the moment but no doubt it has long life ahead.

12/25/2013 - LIFE AT YOUR LEISURE WROTE: 94 Points
Dark crimson color turning violet at the rim with an effervescent, perfumed nose of dark berries and cocoa. The palate is utterly elegant and graceful with flavors of dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, vanilla and oak. It has a 45-second finish with hints of dried herbs and leather. Wow! Drink now with 30 minutes oof decanting until 2024. 94+

12/1/2013 - DF1962 WROTE: 95 Points
An intoxicating combination of big aromas and flavours in an elegant package. Decanted and let air for 2hrs before drinking. Lives up to the hype and a stunningly good value.
4/14/2014 - EY1294 WROTE: 94 Points
- Fast forming legs. It's in total harmony with a medium/full body. Round texture with a long finish - Bordeaux like Rioja.

Amazingly balanced wine where no single dimention dominates. Some dark fruits and earth on the nose. Medium body with elegantly integrated tanins. May be a bit too much of oak. Nice but not showing off acidity. Long but not agressive finish. Great wine though not for those who like Parker and power. Thanks WS for bringing it to public.

12/1/2013 - WINEGUY76 LIKES THIS WINE: 95 Points
Here is a wine of incredible character. Deep ruby core showing some early signs of aging on the rims. Enticing mineral aromas and hints of mint and pencil lead. This medium bodied wine shows great flavor complexity , boasting with layers of cherries, chocolate and Indian spice. The fruit is enticingly clean and well integrated - the nearly ten years of barreling have paid off nicely! - and the tannins soft and silky. A long and velvety finish caps this off very nicely indeed with a classy lingering bite as an added bonus! A very special drinking experience and truly incredible value. This wine is in its youthful prime and should continue to evolve gracefully over the next 15-20 years.
