Description

Sassicaia, the original ‘Super Tuscan’, has never had any agenda other than striving to produce the finest Bordeaux blend, not only in Italy but in the world. Happy to turn its back on the rules and declassify to merely a vino da tavola (table wine) for not using Italian grapes, this quest for the highest quality has since been rewarded by being the first single vineyard wine to be awarded its own DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) the equivalent of the French appellation, Sassicaia DOC.

On the gravel soils of Bolgheri in 2004, Sassicaia’s Cabernet grapes enjoyed a near perfect growing season and the result is a stunning and highly rated wine from all the major critics. Scoring it 97 points, Ian d’Agata, the Italian expert from Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar comments that it is “Amazingly well balanced and fresh wine, with sound, bright acids supplying wonderful lift and precision and smooth, noble tannins adding considerable power and grace.” He goes on to say that “…at this early stage of development[the floral/mineral quality] is typical of the greatest versions of Sassicaia. One of the top dozen Sassicaia bottling ever.” Antonio Galloni hails it as “a lovely, understated effort” while Neal Martin calls it an “elegant and suave” Sassicaia. Jancis Robinson, meanwhile, tasted the wine from magnum and gave it a rather creative score of 17.5+++ points.
