Description

A rare opportunity to taste and compare a bottle of each of these highly rated Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines from the 2005 vintage.

Each bottle comes from its own wooden case, bought on release from reputable English wine merchants and stored since purchase by me at home in a dark, underground cellar. The cases have only recently been opened, for this auction.

The bottles on sale are those shown on the photographs. As can be seen, the bottles, labels and capsules are in very good condition, with good levels.

Some notes on the 2005 Beaucastel:

“This vintage is a beautiful complex and well-balanced wine. The colour is dark and deep, with beautiful ruby shades. The nose is both fresh and complex at the same time with notes of chocolate and spices. The mouth is a subtle balance between freshness and notes of black fruit and mushrooms.” (Famille Perrin, September 2016)

“Reminiscent of the 1995, the 2005 Chateauneuf du Pape is tight, structured and backward, with high acidity and tannin. Showing notes of blackcurrants, black raspberry, truffle, damp earth and cedar, with medium to full-bodied richness and depth, it needs another 3-5 years to reach the early stages of maturity, at which point it will hold for another decade or more. 95 points.” (Jeb Dunnuck, www.robertparker.com, Feb 2015)

“When to drink: 2011 to 2020. Fabulous aromas of sweet fruit, beginning of leather and then really meaty on the palate, seasoned with pepper and spice. Silky texture. Mouthwatering and elegant. Still so much more to come.” (Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson website, October 2010)

"One of the largest estates in the Châteauneuf du Pape appellation….In 2005, they produced their best regular cuvée since 1989 (Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year in 1991)….2005 only intensified the concentration and structure of this ageworthy red." (Wine No 8 - The Top 100 Wines of 2008 - Wine Spectator - Nov-2008).

Tasting notes on the Vieux Télégraphe:

"One of the most age-worthy cuvees in the appellation, Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe’s 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape was gorgeous on this occasion, showing classic iodine, seaweed and peppery herbs intermixed with layers of sweet currant, plum and blackberry fruits. Full-bodied, powerful and ripe, with a still youthful profile, this beauty won’t hit full maturity for another 3-4 years, and should hold for a decade or more after that. 95 points." (Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate # 217, Feb 2015).

“When to drink: 2015 to 2025. Transparent crimson. Lots of ripe fruit and pepper. Cool finish. Very easy to like, and complete…” (Jancis Robinson, November 2010).
