Wine Advocate # 186. Dec 2009. Reviewer : Jay Miller. Clarendon Hills’ flagship is the 2007 Syrah Astralis. It is an exemplar of what old vines and a great terroir can achieve in a less than great vintage. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, tar, underbrush, meat, licorice, and blackberry lead to a burly, masculine version of Astralis. It has tremendous grip, plenty of fine-grained tannin, layers of savory fruit, and 10-12 years of aging potential. Patience will be required.

Published : 15-Sep-2009. Dark but slightly pruney fruit on the nose. Sweet oak spice and char. Very dark and savoury on the palate and much fresher than expected from the nose. Oak a bit drying on the finish. (JH).

Wine Spectator (2007)95 pts
July 31, 2012 - Rich and expressive, playing its gorgeous blackberry and currant fruit against notes of licorice, black pepper and charred meat, lingering effortlessly against refined tannins. Displays impressive depth and precision. Syrah

Sept/Oct 09. By Josh Raynolds. Glass-staining purple. Smoky, mineral-laced boysenberry and blueberry on the nose, with sexy oak spice and floral qualities coming up with air. Rich, fleshy and smooth, offering sappy dark fruit flavors and a wild array of floral and spice accents. For a rich wine this possesses uncanny balance. The endless, spice-accented finish features firm but harmonious tannins and leaves sweet vanilla, cola and dark berry liqueur notes behind. I'd stash this away for at least another five or six years. These vines were planted in 1920.

The 2007 Astralis impresses for its combination of power and nuance. It’s dark and almost tarry in concentration, but floral and bright at the same time. Layers of dark coffee and earth are balanced by red fruit, and although it’s full bodied and rich in texture, the finish introduces delicately herbal, tea-like notes. Best from 2014–2025. — J.C. (3/1/2010)

James Halliday (2007)96 pts
Expected development of deep red-purple colour; the bouquet and palate are so complex and powerful, it is difficult to tease out any single components, but black fruits, licorice, tar, savoury spices, cedary oak are all in play. While full-bodied, the wine has good balance and length. The long cork is of high quality and perfectly inserted.

Jeremy Oliver (2006)97 pts
Sumptuous and sensual; dense and smoky with a heady bouquet of brambly dark fruit, smoked meats, pungent oak and exotic spices. Its luscious palate is deeply stained with black and blue fruit and effortlessly balanced by a powerful but pliant extract of fine tannins. It finishes slightly warm, with a remarkably persistent core of fruit backed by lingering nuances of licorice, mint, menthol and five spice.
