Description

“Wine of the Year”
Jeremy Oliver, The Wine Annual 2012, 98 points.

"Di Cullen had a vision for Margaret River cabernet that married an even, harmonious presence of fruit with a complete, finely honed structure to create a wine of balance and longevity. That’s why she would be so delighted with the 2009 vintage of the wine made by her daughter Vanya and named in her memory. It’s a wine of old-fashioned charm but will also act as a future beacon to other makers of Australian cabernet smart enough to understand it.

Weighing in at a mere 12.5% alcohol, this is a complete, deeply flavoured and measured cabernet reminiscent of the way good Bordeaux used to be before the recent trend towards elevated levels of alcohol and new oak became the popular currency.

Having inherited the winemaking duties in 1989 from Di Cullen, Vanya began to adapt the estate’s operations from a conventional chemical-based system of management towards a holistic, biodynamic approach. She did this expecting – not simply hoping for – an improvement in quality fruit from the vineyard, and to achieve full flavour and tannin ripeness through improved vine health at an earlier stage of the vintage. This certainly happened in 2009, when the fruit delivered everything Cullen was looking for at a very modest level of sugar ripeness.

Viticulture is a once-a-year experiment, so was hardly likely that Cullen was going to get it all her own way from her earliest vintages of biodynamically farmed fruit. Aside from the earlier maturing release from the cool and shady 2006 season, recent vintages have produced the more meaty, evolved and fleshy Diana Madeline from 2007 which perhaps lacked the focus and structure of the better vintages, and a very classy but red fruit-dominant wine from 2008. There’s been a steady refinement throughout these releases, now culminating in the 2009 wine.

In December 2003 I wrote: ‘There is little doubt that Vanya Cullen is the right person to take this icon wine into the new century. Her commitment to quality, her experience, attention to detail and ability to understand and manipulate the minutiae detail in making world-class wine stamp her as a leader in Australia wine. Right now, with the rest of the world doubting Australia’s ability to craft cabernet of international quality, she is needed more than ever.’ I might have got that right!"

"For a more earthly but thoroughly outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon, get your hands on the 2009 Cullen Margaret River Diana Madeline. Vanya Cullen may be Australia’s greatest Cabernet producer and she does it all with biodynamically farmed grapes. Her Cab-based reds are modern classics with a combination of richness, depth and structure with relatively low alcohols. The 2009 is only 12.5 percent alcohol. Even first growth Bordeaux nowadays are well above that in alcohol in a top vintage."

Pristine condition and immaculate provenance.
