Description

95 points, James Halliday: “Supremely graceful and fine in typical Mount Mary style; the long and silky palate has a tapestry of red and black fruit flavours, the finish long and satisfying, the aftertaste lingering for minutes.”

MOUNT MARY Quintet Yarra Valley Victoria - Langton's Exceptional Classification

Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's:
"Mount Mary commands an almost mythical status among wine collectors. The property was first purchased by the late Dr.John Middleton (1928- 2006) in 1971. The original vineyard was planted in 1972. Quintet is a classically proportioned style based on five classic Bordeaux varieties – Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Merlot and Petit Verdot.

The low yielding unirrigated vineyard is almost 12.5 hectares and is planted on grey soils – sandy clay loams overlying degenerating Silurian shales. The vines face due north and capture optimum sunlight during the growing season. The grapes are hand harvested, lightly crushed, totally destemmed, fermented in both open and closed fermenters with careful temperature control and frequent pumping over. Malolactic fermentation takes place once primary fermentation is completed. After the lees have settled, the wine is de-vatted to 30% new French oak barriques and 30% large format casks in its first year. In its second year the wine is racked into older barriques for 10 months.

During the 1990s Mount Mary Quintet 'Cabernets' evolved becoming richer and more complex; perhaps owing more to vine age than winery practice. The wine exhibits a purity of fruit, poise, elegance and structure found in few Australian Cabernets with cedar and blackcurrant "small fruit" aromas, fine-grained savoury tannins, superb vinosity and flavour length. Dr. John Middleton always preferred subtlety and elegance in his wines. He was something of a maverick and pioneering spirit.

Mount Mary has remained in family hands. David Middleton, a zoologist and vet, shares with his father "a great love of nature and a great disdain for authority and bureaucracy". The way of doing things is unchanged, beyond a genuine desire to improve and build on past successes. The idea of allowing "Quintet to speak of itself and to be pleasurable with food" remains an enduring principle. Naturally balanced, well-concentrated and classically proportioned, the wine has a great reputation for longevity. Typically the wine will develop earthy, roasted chestnut, mocha characters with age.

With generational change, there are huge expectations, but with a remarkable vineyard site, family commitment, longstanding team experience and new ideas, Quintet continues on its transcendent path. 1976 marked the first vintage of Quintet; first released as Mount Mary Cabernets.
