Description

Very rare wine now from the master of Vouvray.

"Produced from vines planted in calcareous and stony soils, the 1997 Vouvray Moelleux Le Clos du Bourg 1er Trie exhibits aromas reminiscent of smoke, clay, chalk, and candied lemons. This medium-bodied, penetrating, as well as super-rich wine is balanced, concentrated, and intense. Layers of earth, apples, figs, white peaches, and minerals are found in this magnificent sweet wine's flavor profile and stupendous length. Presently somewhat austere and reserved, it will benefit from a few years of cellaring. Projected maturity: 2003-2025+.

Wine Advocate Score: 95 points

"Polished. Deep yellow-gold. Lovely ripe nose that is lifted and perfumed with a complex array of aromas: apricot confit and exotic fruits. Rich and concentrated on entry with lovely balancing freshness. Flavours of oranges and apricot confit to the finish. This is open and expressive, but also still in its adolescent state and has a very long and distinguished life ahead of it. (01/10)"

Richard Kelley MW: "The definitive guide to the wines of the Loire"

"This has an appealing, mid-gold hue, pure but not excessively or worryingly deep in colour. The nose has a number of classic Chenin traits, showing a warm, woolly character, with faint traces of honey and toffee that I suspect may become a little more apparent with further bottle age. Rich and quite direct and defined on entry, before showing a broad and yet firmly structured character through the midpalate, with good texture cut through most decisively by a classically styled acidity. Little notes of richness on the finish. Lovely balance, and great length. It still has quite a tight core on the palate, and this wine clearly has a lot of potential for the future. I am glad I have the best part of half a case left to see how this one goes - it should be great. From a tasting of the 1997 Vintage at ten years of age."

Wine doctor, December 2007: 18.5+/20

Cellartracker 2014: 93 Points:

Botrytis, lime, some tropical fruit (guava), stone fruit. This was awesome. Great acidity balancing the sugar. Very pretty nose. Long finish of botrytis spice. Quite developed, drinking great, and not one for the ages, but fantastic now.

Cellartracker 2013: No score given:

Terrific wines with outrageously good cassoulet as the supper club reconvenes. (Christine & Marty's.): From a half bottle and while still quite youthful, it's matured enough so that the baby fat sweetness has receded to reveal more acidity than I think many might have expected from a '97. Surprisingly open and forward considering it was not decanted, it's rather flamboyant on the nose and palate with a strong honey profile with botrytis notes. Yellow fruited with chalky mineral and while quite sweet, the acidity does its job admirably. Layered, long and thoroughly satisfying. Solid A.

Cellartracker 2012: 96 points:

Whoa, rich. The last bottle several years ago must have given me the mistaken impression that this would be closer to ready. This is a massive, rich, honeyed, layered and intense wine and I really enjoyed it for that, but even I, the guy who thinks that people way over fetishize age in wine, thinks this needs a good bit more time. I think this has the potential to be every bit as good as any Clos du Bourg 1er ever made. Really. It is just so stuffed with fruit and honey with the density of a Higgs boson. Give it at least 5, 10 would be better and save a bottle for your grandkids.
