Description

I am currently in the process of consolidating and reducing slightly, the contents of my wine ‘collection’.

With this is mind, I thought that, as a lover of Italian wine (which makes up about 96% of my collection!) I would put together for sale, a ready-prepared selection of high-level Italian wine, perfect for those who would like to try some “good stuff”, but with one or two less-well-known names in the mix.

NOTE: I have put a reserve price on this sale. Usually I do not. But, due to the quality of the wines involved (in my humble opinion), I am very keen that this should go to someone who has a real commitment to good wine, rather than it ‘slipping through the net’ due to a low price, and so reaching someone looking for a ‘bargain’, rather than six real gems.

So the wines are (two bottles of each):

1. 2012 Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido, D.O.C Bolgheri.
Ok, this wine barely needs any introduction to anyone with even a passing familiarity with Italian wine. The wine was born almost as an ‘experiment’, by The Marchese Mario Incisa Della Rocchetta (phew!). As a young man, he had stayed with friends and relatives who, being members of the Nobility, aquainted Mario with fine Bordeaux. So the dream was born, and he began planning the growth of his own Bordeaux-style, “serious” wine, but on Italian soil.
The first vintage of Sassicaia was in 1968. This 2012 vintage is made up of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. The climate for the 2012 vintage was described as “rather special”, and this wine was scored 93 by Robert Parker, and 94 by James Suckling. Here is an extract of JS’s review:

“…Sassicaia lovers are going to find the 2012 a wonderful surprise for the famous super Tuscan red of Italy. The 2012 is a classic styled Sassicaia with wonderful freshness, firmness and finesse. I loved the floral and currant aromas as well as the dense and compacted palate of dark fruits and fine tannins. It shows a beautiful suppleness that reminds me of the excellent 1997, 2001 or 2004. And it develops wonderfully growing in texture and in flavor with every minute in the glass. It is the best Sassicaia since 2009…”

Many reviews by other noted wine writers and publications run in a similar vein, virtually all heaping praise on this wonderful wine, as if we needed to be told!

2. Brunello di Montalcino, Siro Pacenti 2009
No Top Italian wine selection would be complete without the presence of Brunello di Montalcino, the iconic wine from Tuscany, based on an exclusive, ‘super-strain” of Sangiovese, the base varietal of Chianti wine.

Siro Pacenti is not the largest, nor the best known, of Brunello producers. But it is building quite a following, and many keen buyers are buying into this niche label. The wines are scoring consistently well: 95 points from Robert Parker, and 93 points from James a Suckling, for example. This is a serious, velvety, complex, fruity Brunello, with much ageing potential. A true class act of a Brunello di Montalcino.

3. Le Serre Nuove Dell’Ornellaia 2013
First made in 1997, Le Serre Nuove, the 'second' wine of the Ornellaia estate was created to allow even more rigorous selection of the base wines during the creation of Ornellaia. Produced mainly from the estate's younger vines, Le Serre Nuove combines the pedigree of the flagship wine with the suppleness and youthfulness of a more approachable style. Vinification and barrel ageing of Le Serre Nuove is identical to Ornellaia itself and produces a complex, well structured wine dominated by ripe attractive red berry fruit aromas. Scores for this wine include 94 points from James Suckling, and 91 from cellar tracker.
