Koyle Carmenere Los Lingues Single Vineyard, 2014 (ERP 89pts)
The 2014 Reserva Carmenere was sourced from the lower parts of their slope vineyards in Los Lingues. It's produced in a fresh and not too herbaceous style, bottled after 16 months aging. At Koyle, 2014 had limited yields—after the frosts of the 2013 spring—and was a coolish year, perhaps a little riper than 2013 but certainly a lot fresher than 2015. This has the weedy style of the Carmenere and some roasted flavors from the variety and possibly because of the volcanic soils. This is not heavy at all, and the palate is soft and balanced and reminds me more of a Cabernet Franc; in other words, a Carmenere without excess. 76,000 bottles produced.

Tabali, Micas Carmenere, Peumo, 2014 (ERP 91pts)
There is a new Carmenere, the 2014 Micas, sourced from a vineyard in Peumo planted in 1954 on granite soils rich in feldspar and mica that name the wine. The hand-picked grapes were transported to the Tabalí winery in Limarí (some 500 kilometers!). It fermented in stainless steel, and the wine matured in 15% new French oak barrels for 22 months. The grapes were harvested relatively early, given the natural low yields (some 6,000 kilos from 8,000 plants). The wine has a perfect ripe nose that reminded me some of the wines from De Martino, with aromas of cigar box, and tobacco leaves, spicy and with a smoky touch that reminded me of the Chilean spice mix Merken. The palate is terribly balanced, with silky tannins and very good freshness. I wish there were more Carmeneres like this. Terribly tasty.

Primus Carmenere, 2014 (ERP 88pts)
The 2014 Primus Carmenere was produced with fruit from Apalta. The vines are 60 years old, and its grapes fermented in open vats with indigenous yeasts. The aging was in 20% new barrels and lasted until bottling in August 2015. It's very spicy, with some minty undertones, a little dusty, with some rusticity. It's quite balsamic, with flavors of cigar ash. 12,000 bottles produced.
