Description

Clearing out space in the cellar and have 4 bottles of the ever popular and great-value Barrua from Agricola Punica in southwestern Sardinia. It is at its peak and drinking wonderfully now. I have a few other lots of Italian & French reds in their prime and happy to combine postage on any lots bought together.

AgriPunica is a joint venture between the Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia Group, Sardinian winery Cantina di Santadi, Santadi’s President Antonello Pilloni and the late, legendary Tuscan consulting oenologist, Giacomo Tachis. It was Dr. Tachis who first thought about the Sardinia and Carignano match and he persuaded all the others in order to produce a fantastic Carignano wine.

Of the project, Antonio Galloni of Vinous.com has written: “Agricola Punica is a project that combines the considerable talents of Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia) proprietor Sebastiano Rosa, oenologist Giacomo Tachis and noted Sardinian producer Santadi – how’s that for an all-star team?”

Situated in the southwest of the island of Sardinia, Agricola Punica is around 300 miles from their legendary joint owners, Tenuta San Guido of Bolgheri. The vineyards are in an area known as ‘Sulcis Meridionale’ and the wine falls under the IGT of ‘Isola dei Nuraghi,’ making reference to the ancient stone edifices found on the Island. With mild winters, hot and dry summers and an average of seven hours sunlight per day, Agricola Punica argue their terroir is perfect to get the absolute best from this grape, Carignano (Carignan/Cariñena).

Some say this is the ‘Sardinian Sassicaia,’ blending long-time Sardinian favourite, Carignano with Bordeaux varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it’s easy to see where the comparisons come from. The wine is typically a blend of 85% Carignano, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Merlot.

A rich dark red velvet cloak of colour. A delightful bouquet rises from the glass with notes of redcurrants, spice and dried summer herbs and flowers, reminiscent of Sardinian Indian-summer holidays. We don’t tend to use the word smooth much in tasting notes, but it seems apt for this wine, so very well knit are the red and black fruit, kitchen spice notes, crisp acidity, malleable tannins and balancing alcohol on the palate (Berry Bros).

“Deep red-ruby. Red cherry, dark plum, spices and earth on the nose, complicated by grilled herbs and flint. Plush, sexy and deep, delivering layered flavors of strawberry, licorice, and dried flowers. This broad wine offers an exciting combination of size and fresh acidity. The very long, savory finish features youthfully dusty but ripe tannins. Drink 2020 – 2026.” 91+/100 points - Ian D'Agata – Vinous.com – March 2018
