Description

These wines represent a selection from some high quality but little known Australia producers, most from cooler regions such as the Hunter Valley, Adelaide Hills and Orange. The stock comes from the cellar of a now-defunct merchant and is in excellent condition.

CAPERCAILLIE CEILIDH 2006 SHIRAZ x 3 2006 Shiraz
CAPERCAILLIE GHILLIE 2006 SHIRAZ x 3 2006 Shiraz
LARK HILL 2003 SHIRAZ x 3 2003 Shiraz
FIRST CREEK SHIRAZ 2005 x 3 2005 Shiraz

CAPERCAILLIE CEILIDH 2006 SHIRAZ

[Screwcap]

Deep black/red to purple rim. Very closed at first but after 24 hours in a decanter this started to show classic Shiraz characters - baked earth, smoke, grilled meat, plum and blackberry. Some clove and vanilla characters from the otherwise subtle oak can be picked up on the nose.

Fine grained. slightly sandy tannins on the attack are followed  by grilled meat, plum and chocolate flavours. Slightly perfumed too. This wine has a good vein of acidity to keep it fresh and the 15% alcohol is, very surprisingly, barely noticeable. Given the development over time, this really needs another few years to come together. 3.5*+

Ruby red with aromas of blackcurrants and pepper, and hints of coffee and vanilla from the oak. Lots of black cherry, cloves, toasty oak and silky tannins in the mouth. The finish is soft, rounded and lingering. Drinking well now; will develop further over the next 5 years.

CAPERCAILLIE GHILLIE 2006 SHIRAZ

An exceptional wine with a tarry, earthy aroma partnered by plum, with more plums on the palate and plenty of tannins. A long, youthful and elegant wine with years ahead of it.

LARK HILL 2003 SHIRAZ

[Screwcap]

Deep red to crimson rim. Very closed at first; a hint of American oak but that’s it. In the mouth this is a little more giving – some spice and red fruit. With time this opens up a little to become higher toned – almost shades of a top notch Rioja but with more pepper and dark spices. On day two the nose is very much in the sous-bois/pepper/black fruit spectrum. Cool and slightly peppery in the mouth, a real note of cooked plum on the long finish. Good wine – no crime to open it now but would be just as happy being forgotten about for a while. 3.5*+

A bright, deep garnet wine with spicy aromas. The palate is full and warm with rich notes of pepper, spice and ripe blackberry. The oak characters are fully integrated, giving a deeply satisfying yet stylish red wine of some maturity.

FIRST CREEK SHIRAZ 2005

Deep red in colour to a crimson rim. Creamy nose with notes of plum and cherry and a touch of mushroom. Quite savoury. Subtle in the mouth; hints of spice and more cool cherry fruit. A vein of acidity keeps this fresh. 3.5*

Deep ruby red wine with aromas of ripe mulberry and blackberry integrated with spicy cinnamon. A classically medium-bodied style with sweet berry fruit mid palate, balanced with savoury oak. Ripe tannins give great length and structure.
