Description

A chance to drink and compare two top Chateuneufs from the very good 2000 vintage. These two bottles should prove perfect drinking now and next year. Robert Parker awarded these wines 94 and 91 points respectively.

Decanter Magazine rated the 2000 vintage as particularly successful in the southern Rhône, and Châteauneuf-du-Pâpe was outstanding. “Some wines will rival the magnificent 1998s in quality.”

Notes on the Beaucastel 2000:

94 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, February 2003.

"Super-ripe blackberry and cassis fruit dominate the 2000's aromatics. Reminiscent of a fuller, beefier version of the 1985, this low acid, accessible Beaucastel is likely to be bottled earlier than normal according to Francois Perrin. A classic blend of 30% grenache, 30% mourvedre, 10% syrah, 10% counoise with the remainder miscellaneous varietals, this deep ruby purple coloured 2000 possesses a sweet nose dominated by black fruits, loads of glycerin, full body, and superb purity. It will be atypically delicious young, yet will last 15-20 years."

“The 2000 vintage is still a young wine of rare quality, flawless! The nose is very fresh, with notes of chocolate. The mouth is round and reveals ripe fruit, soft tannins and good length.” Famille Perrin, September 2016.

For the Vieux Telegraphe 2000:

91 points, Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, February 2003.

“The elegant 2000 Vieux Telegraphe La Crau possesses 14.8% alcohol, along with a deep ruby/purple color, charming, rich, fruitiness, and firm tannin in the finish. With loads of freshness, copious quantities of pepper, seaweed, and black fruit characteristics, and a distinctive minerality, this full-bodied, sweet 2000 requires 2-3 years of cellaring; it should age well for 15-16 years. Anticipated maturity: 2005-2018.”

90 points, Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, February 2003:

“Medium red-ruby. Warm, inviting aromas of smoky red fruits, tobacco and black pepper. Bright and gripping on entry, then juicy and brisk in the middle, with slightly medicinal red fruit, mineral and tobacco flavors a classic structure for aging.”

The bottles on sale are those shown in the photographs. Their provenance is that both bottles come from wooden cases of 12 bought from a reputable UK wine merchant on release. I have kept them since release in a proper dark underground cellar, stored on their sides. The levels, labels and capsules are good, as shown.
