Description

A rare opportunity to taste and compare a bottle of each of these highly rated Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines from the 1997 vintage.

Each bottle comes from its own wooden case, bought on release from reputable English wine merchants and stored since purchase at home in a dark, underground cellar. The cases have only recently been opened, for this auction.

The bottles on sale are those shown on the photographs. Bottles, labels and capsules are in good condition, with good levels. The Vieux Télégraphe is not currently available retail in the UK.

Some notes on the 1997 Beaucastel:

“Yields for the 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape were tiny, averaging 22 hectoliters per hectare, and the wine is one of the most seductive and forward young Beaucastels I have tasted since the 1985. The blend was 35% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 5% Syrah, 5% Cinsault, and the rest other southern Rhone varietals. The deep ruby colour is accompanied by forward, attractive aromatics consisting of black raspberries, cherries, liquorice, floral and herb scents. The wine is fruit-driven, with less structure than usual, but luscious cassis, liquorice and blackberries inundate the palate with no hard edges. Seductive, supple-textured… this wine should drink well young and last for 15 or more years. Score: 89/91.

(Robert Parker, Wine Advocate (121), February 1999).

“Good deep ruby-red. Spicy aromas of black cherry and bitter chocolate; the 40% mourvedre component gives this wine unusual freshness for a '97. Silky but bright on the palate, with leather and game nuances adding complexity to the black fruit flavours. 90 points.”

(Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, January 2000.)

A couple of Cellartracker notes:

“1/11/2019 - Rick 4 Wine likes this wine: 94 Points

Drinking beautifully here. CT people are smoking crack saying end of this drinking window was 2014!! Truly I don’t understand the perspective. This wine is full of fruit and nicely integrated with HdP and terroir, and by “terroir” I mean a deep tar-like flavor that lingers from the late palate to the finish. Some herbaceous qualities.”

“8/25/2018 - afu wrote: 95 Points

This bottle way exceeded my expectations after reading so much about older CDP's like this being well past their prime. This was not. This was an elegant wine, velvet mouth feel with plenty of energy and fruit - but not a fruit bomb by any stretch. Plus a nice long finish. A 30-minute decant helped and it kept getting better until there was no more. As for the wine itself, it was lighter in color. There were notes of cherry, dark raspberry and licorice with a wonderful and delicate nose. Initially I was concerned what would be left, what a very pleasant surprise.”

Tasting notes on the 1997 Vieux Télégraphe:

“Fine aromas of aged Châteauneuf: undergrowth, olive, polished wood. Lovely freshness and so finely balanced with the ageing fruit flavours filling out the dry but fully resolved tannins. Julia Harding MW, Jancis Robinson website. Tasted: 13-Sep-2012.”

Robert Parker:

“The 1997 Châteauneuf du Pape is an evolved, forward, richly fruity wine with medium body, and plenty of smoke, pepper, Allspice, black cherry and Provencal herb aromas. It is seductive, round, charming, and sexy. The wine reveals pepper and spicy aromas.” (RP) (February 1999)

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

“Medium plummy red. Open nose combines red plum, redcurrant, tobacco, cinnamon and earth, plus hints of chocolate and licorice. Round and gentle in the mouth, with good balance for the vintage…..Fairly tannic finish, but the tannin are fine.” (ST) (1/2000)
