Description

One bottle of this highly rated Chateauneuf-du-Pape wine from the 2004 vintage.

Owned by the Perrin family, Beaucastel can be traced back to 1549 and is one of the few properties to include all 13 permitted varieties in Chateauneuf du Pape. The wines have elegance, poise and plenty of earthy terroir notes and are capable of extended ageing.

Some tasting notes:

Beaucastel’s proprietors cite the 'serene' conditions under the Mistral wind in September, which permitted grapes to achieve full phenolic ripeness without risk, as the main factor contributing to the success of the vintage:

“The practice here is to assemble the wine in the months prior to bottling and impressions at this stage come from the individual cépages. Counoise, a traditional variety that contributes leathery notes, in this vintage revealed an uncharacteristic purity and freshness. Syrah was truly beautiful, deep with a discreet yet authoritative note. It was ripe almost to the point of sweetness, showing refined fruit and beautiful tannins. Grenache was fabulously intense, flowing and exhibiting notes of fresh fruit and violets. Mourvèdre, as always an important contributor here, was magnificent, with a juicy, lush nature, very fine tannins and unusual complexity.”

Robert Parker:

“Showing brilliantly, with a deep, rich and layered profile, the 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape has gorgeous black cherry, earth, underbrush and background meatiness that gives way to a full-bodied, concentrated and pure feel on the palate. A foudre-aged blend of 30% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, with the balance a mix of the other permitted varieties, this knockout Chateauneuf du Pape will have another 10-15 years of prime drinking.” (Jeb Dunnuck 94, Robert Parker 93, February 2014, www.robertparker.com).

Jancis Robinson:

“Still quite dark crimson. Strong balsamic notes – as though they were going all out for maximum ripeness in this era. Big and beefy. Quite chewy finish after meat extract and blackberries.” (Jancis Robinson, October 2013).

This bottle comes from a full wooden case bought on release from reputable English wine merchants and stored since purchase at home in a dark, underground cellar.

The bottle on sale is the one shown on the photographs. As can be seen, the bottle, label (subject to a slight stain as shown) and capsule are in good condition, with a good level.
