Bernkastler Doctor Riesling Spatlese 2004, Wegeler 2 bts

2 lots of 2 bts. I bought several cases for a family event and these two pairs are surplus to requirement!

Please note that these wines are a special bottling by the producer - they describe then as a 'dry Grand Cru' - akin to a GG ('Gross Gewachs').

My note:

11.5% and definitely closer to dry than a traditional spatlese (despite not being labelled trocken). There was a touch of lime and petrol on the nose - indeed the aromatic profile would have pushed me towards the Clare valley if I'd had it blind. In the mouth this it was all chalk dust and stone with the limeiness carrying on. A slight oiliness too.

Jancis Robinson says of the 2005:

Strong greenish tinge. Lime and minerals - very neat nose. Very fresh and lively and dancing, Lovely texture with good balance - dry but with lots of fruit concentration on the mid palate. Not unlike a Clare Valley Riesling with a polish (no pun intended re Polish Hill) and a long history. Very successful. Great site of course. 18/20pts
