Ornellaia, Bolgheri Superiore, 2012 – Collector’s Edition Case of Six Bottles

I am presenting something which truly is not to be missed by passionate Oenophiles. Whether for laying down to drink at a later time, purchasing as part of an investment interest, or simply for adding to your prizeworthy collection, this should not be missed by anyone passionate about serious wine.

I have two cases in total. This auction is for ONE case of SIX bottles only. If you are interested in adding the second case to your collection, please contact me, via this site, and we can discuss a (reduced) price for both cases.

As we approach the Christmas Period, this would also make a perfect gift for someone very special, who loves and understands very special wine.

Ornellaia Bolgheri Superiore is a ‘Supertuscan’ wine of world-wide fame. Starting with its first release, the 1985 vintage, Ornellaia has produced, with amazing year-after-year consistency, world class “Bordeaux-style” red wine (though this term is not, allegedly, a favourite of the Marchese de’ Ferdinando Frescobaldi who has a 50% holding in the Winery. He insists Ornellaia is a ‘special wine in its own right’ and only refers to it as “Bordeaux-style” to reflect the similarity in varietals between the two: Ornellaia 2012’s varietals (roughly similar to much Bordeaux wine), are: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot).

The Ornellaia 2012 Collector’s Edition:
In recent years, Ornellaia have decided to mark these exceptional vintages by producing a number of cases in strictly limited quantity, which are then carefully allocated. These Collector’s Edition cases differ as:
• Each lot of six, 75cl bottles comes in a specially designed wooden crate, with ‘re-closable’ lid, rather than the top of the crate being simply ‘tacked’ down with metal pins or similar;
• Each Limited Edition case comes with a brief but beautiful presentation, on heavy, creamy paper giving a description of the vintage, preparation and tasting notes of the wine in several languages.
• The greatest feature marking the Limited Edition cases apart is the inclusion of ONE bottle among the six, which has a label decorated by a renowned artist, in accordance with the qualities of the year’s wine character. Named Vendemmie D’artista (Artists’ Vintages), the 2012 release was christened ‘L’Incanto’ (The Enchantment). Swiss artist John Armleder was commissioned to highlight this attribute visually. This was the seventh year this task was accomplished. Quoting from the enclosed paper: “The red colour represents the wine itself and the stylised “splash”, a recurring form in Armleder’s own works, symbolises the unique and unrepeatable moment in which Ornellaia 2012 enchants our senses, suspends time and leaves us in contemplation”.

The Wine Itself:
James Suckling’s notes include: "A tight and silky red with compacted fruit and tannin texture featuring blackcurrant, mushroom and bark undertones. Full body, firm tannins and a minerally finish. Excellent structure and mouthfeel. A cooler style of Ornellaia, bringing it back to the classicism of this celebrated region. Bordeaux blend. Better in 2018." Mr Suckling awarded 97 points.

Jancis Robinson’s Wine Spectator review says: “Big, sweet and appealing with tea leaf aromas and lift. Opulent, sweet-fruited and velvety-textured. Polished nose of dark fruit perfectly matched by complex oak… Balanced and fine but firm tannins. Already approachable”, with a score of 17.5+ (out of 20).

Axel Heinz, Director & Winemaker at the Ornellaia estate, says: “These generous, full-volumed wines are remarkably appealing and seductive, with an overall character that we like to define with the term L'Incanto ('Enchantment'). Ornellaia 2012 appears a deep ruby, and a remarkably beguiling bouquet boasts rich fruit and spices notes. The palate is well rounded, full and generous, with glossy tannins. The 2012 lacks none of the proverbial concentration that distinguishes Ornellaia's great vintages, but this vintage adroitly masks that richness with an expansive, magisterial structure, then concludes with a near-endless finish."

Of course, a collector’s edition of such a fine wine may also be viewed as a potential financial investment by those with suitable expertise and experience:

Ornellaia 2012 ALONE (without the 'Limited Edition Case' inclusions described above) holds a respectable place on Vinfolio.com’s latest list of “Top 100 Collectible Wines”. Vinfolio comments: “…the grapes produced were highly concentrated in flavour, and produced wines with long ageing potential. Merlot and Cabernet Franc varietals were especially robust in 2012, allowing the Ornellaia blend exceptional complexity”.

Serena Sutcliffe, Master of Wine, and Head of the International Wine Department at Sotheby's Auction House, London, adds: "An amazing, spicy, blueberry and blackberry taste, rich and all-enveloping… A great wine, with a sweet opulence all over the palate, truly an "enchantment," with coffee and cassis all through, and an espresso, luscious finish”.

I end with some words from John Armleder himself, the artist whose work adorns the collectible bottles of Ornellaia’s 2012 ‘The Enchantment’:
“When I tasted (it) for the first time, I was immediately transported to a world of dreams. It was unexpected and surprising. The artwork I created, however, represents the surprise and pleasure I felt, and I want people to experience that feeling for themselves. When they discover the label for the first time, that unique experience will become their own. Such a moment can never be repeated.”
