Description

I am auctioning a 'vertical' of Bolgheri's iconic Ornellaia "Supertuscan", with the two vintages on offer forming a part of the Tenuta's 'Vendemmia D'Artista' project: for each of the past eight years, Bolgheri have commissioned a renowned and contemporary artist and oenophile (awarding the honor to a different Artist each year), to create a wine whose name (in just one word or two) and label (designed by the relevant artist), sums up the essence, or spirit, of that year's vintage.

In each case of six (750mL) bottles, one bottle (only) is adorned with this label, making it both a beautiful addition to any serious wine collection, but also, adding considerably to the potential Collector's Value of each case.

I have for auction, one case of the 2012 vintage, and one of the 2013.

In keeping with the themes mentioned above, each wooden case of six, 750mL bottles contains one bottle, decorated with the artist's label, unique to the Vintage in question. Each case also contains a luxuriously produced pamphlet, giving much more detail around the particular design inspiration, label, etc., for that Vintage. Ornellaia's varietals and compositions are based around the "Bordeaux Red" model.

The 2012 Vintage was christened "L'Incanto" (The Enchantment) by Swiss Artist, John Armleder who designed that year's Limited Production label. The wine comprises: 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot.

The 2013 Vintage was given the name "L'Eleganza" (Elegance) by Japanese Artist Yutaka Sone. It's Composition is: 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 7% Petit Verdot.

Given the overwhelming abundance of tasting notes, "scores", and so on, found on the 'net today, I will give a sample of such details for each wine, thus leaving the interested oenophile to use these tools to form their own opinions of these wonderful wines ('scores' are out of 100, unless stated otherwise):

Beginning with the 2013 Vintage:

James Suckling - 98 Points:
"Amazing graphite and violet aromas with dark fruits. Medium to full body, ultra-velvety tannins and a long and beautiful finish. Formed and tight. I love the fresh ginger underneath it all. A cool profile that's so approachable with wonderful length."

Robert Parker - 96 Points:
"....2013 was a difficult vintage especially towards the early part of the growing season. It balanced out during the summer and allowed for steady ripening of fruit before the harvest. But 2013 was not as hot as 2011 and 2012 overall, and this edition of Ornellaia is beautifully tonic and shapely as a result. The bouquet is very developed in terms of aromas this year with beautiful notes of dark fruit, tobacco and spice. Those perfumes are just gorgeous. The mouthfeel is similarly intense with tannins that are still young, but are already silky and linear in nature. This vintage promises a long aging future."

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) - 96+ Points:
"The 2013 Ornellaia continues to put on weight with time in bottle. I have tasted the 2013 three times over the last few months and watched it blossom over that time. Fresh, vibrant and tightly wound, the 2013 is going to need at least a few years to come into its own. There is striking purity to the aromas and flavors, along with plenty of tension and enough energy to reward cellaring."

The 2012 Vintage:

James Suckling - 97 Points:
"A tight and silky red with compacted fruit and tannin texture featuring blackcurrant, mushroom and bark undertones. Full body, firm tannins and a minerally finish. Excellent structure and mouthfeel. A cooler style of Ornellaia, bringing it back to the classicism of this celebrated region. Bordeaux blend. Better in 2018."

Robert Parker - 94 Points:
"....This seamless blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, shows some of the roundness and softness of [the] summer heat. The wine's density and extraction are spot-on and the bouquet is beautifully shaped by dark cherry nuances with spice, leather and tobacco at the back. There is a gorgeous sense of richness and plushness here. Some 160,000 bottles were produced. This edition of Ornellaia is more immediate in character and less suited to the decades-long aging that cooler vintages can affront so successfully."

Antonio Galloni (Vinous) - 94+
"...Rich, powerful and concentrated, the 2012 offers plenty of depth and intensity, with expressive fruit and striking mid-palate intensity. Dark red cherry jam, wild flowers, licorice, smoke, tobacco and mint blossom in the glass. There is a very slight element of dryness in the tannin that is the signature of a year in which ripening took place in fits and starts. It will be interesting to see that note soften over time."

As may be discerned from the above, and also from the photographs of the actual wines which I am auctioning, this two-year, consecutive vintage should strike those who enjoy wine passionately, as a great addition to any serious wine collection - both in the collectible and aesthetic sense - as well as the opportunity to own two Vintages of arguably the most striking Supertuscan on the market, in a beautiful, limited edition format of artistic design, and truly, world-class wine making.
