Description

Highly promising vintage of a Brunello that has won many admirers - see comments below.

"I still remember the first Brunello I tasted from Cupano, where I was and what I was doing. I was floored." (Antonio Galloni in The Wine Advocate).

"This is the single best up-and-coming producer of Brunello di Montalcino today." (Ecco Guide to the Wines of Italy)

Matthew Jukes says of Cupano's owner and winemaker:
"Lionel Cousin, is one of the most dedicated men in the business and he learnt his trade from none other than the late, great Henri Jayer... Jayer’s impact on Cousin is embedded into every sip of his wine. Lionel works his entire estate by hand. He has carried tonnes of rock up from the Ombrone river to give better support and drainage to his vines. He planted every single vine by hand and he works between the rows using a horse and plough. He spends hours every day walking through the vines, meticulously pruning his bunches with a pair of nail scissors! He is wholly dedicated to Cupano – this is why his wines are worth their weight in gold."

The 2007 is not currently available in the UK as far as I can see. Here is SWIG's note on it from May last year:
"This is really, really lovely. I opened a bottle the night before last and had a glass out of it – and brought the rest in for everyone to try blind at lunch time. They loved it. Starts with beautiful Tuscan wine aromas with pot pourri and oak and the beautiful cellar aroma of wine soaked oak. When serving either decant or pour out a glass and then leave the bottle open for a few hours. When you first open it there is some sweetness to the ripe fruit. It is absolutely gorgeous but the complexity, freshness and balancing acidity and gentle tannins come out more with being open, carrying the fabulous flavour. After a day it took on beautiful very classy classic wine character like a great aged fine wine."
