Description

1 x Tenuta Friggiali Brunello 2007
1 x Casanova di Neri Brunello 2007
1 x Castello Banfi Brunello 2009

2007 was an extremely good vintage in Montalcino. 2009 was rated as below average, however the Castello Banfi was one of the highest scoring upon release and is drinking beautifully now.

This makes a lovely selection together.

Tenuta Friggiali (Decanter 95 Points)

It’s not unusual for producers at Montalcino to own plots in different parts of the DOCG zone, but the tendency is to blend wines from different vineyards rather than highlight single terroir features with separate bottlings. The Peluso-Centolani family is an exception to this rule, having always bottled its wines from the Pietranera estate at Castenuovo dell’Abate separately to those from Friggiali, which is located on the slopes immediately south of Montalcino. Pietranera ages in French oak and has the structure, depth and intensity of Castelnuovo. Friggiali has the aroma and the racy elegance of Montalcino and the touch of tradition given by the use of medium-size Slavonian oak barrels. Riccardo Cotarella is the consultant winemaker, and it shows.
RB ‘A herbaceous and floral nose with pure berry fruit. Austere tannins provide a dry and precise palate. The finish is long and concentrated. Great potential.’
RG ‘A light, fresh nose bursting with cherry fruit. The elegant palate is medium bodied with firm tannins and a dry finish.’
JH ‘Delicate aromas of savoury dried peaches are warm and inviting. A well-structured palate offers firm but not overwhelming tannins. Suggests all the typical elements of a Brunello di Montalcino.’

Casanova Di Neri 93 Points

After a scrupulous selection of the grapes and the grapes, fermentation is carried out without the addition of yeasts and maceration in truncated conical vats at a controlled temperature for 3/4 weeks, and then refining in oak barrels for about 42 months and 6 months in the bottle. This Brunello, with its typical ruby red color with garnet highlights, has hints of maraschino cherry, violet and red fruits. You notice a great finesse in the mouth with a tannin still young but of excellent quality. Long, elegant and persistent.

Banfi 91 Points

Banfi’s 2009 Brunello di Montalcino is a well made and straightforward expression of Sangiovese that delivers the goods in an utterly clear and confident manner. It helps to know that this wine has some of the most sophisticated technology and most experienced winemakers at its back. This is one of a handful of new vintages to benefit from new investments to the crush pad and grape processing areas. What I like about this vintage is that is shows a little more of the distinct personality (the supple warmth and textural smoothness) that you get with Brunello made in the lower Sant’Angelo quadrant. The appearance is dark and rich, followed by balanced tones of dried cherry, raspberry, coffee grinds, leather and mild tobacco. The oak regime sees two years of 50% botte grande and 50% French barrique. Drink: 2016-2021
