Description

A wonderful '66 to contemplate!

Judging by the tasting notes on the web this wine is a great example of mature Claret (the latest two Cos reviews on Cellar Tracker were 88 and 91, with the 88 points being for a half bottle) from one of the most prestigious 'Super Seconds'!

Ch Cos d'Estournel 1966, 2eme GCC St Estephe
Average price - £129 [Decanter.com]
Robert Parker: "A very good 1966 ... the Cos d'Estournel is medium to dark ruby, with some browning. It has very good concentration in the somewhat lean, austere character of the vintage, and plenty of tannin in the finish. Although it does not yet seem to be mature, I would drink it over the near term before the fruit begins to fade..." (Bordeaux Book, 3rd Edition)

Recent Cellar Tracker Tasting Notes:

12/14/2013 - JOHNH1001 WROTE: 90 Points
A bit tired, but still kicking nose of earth, dark fruit, cedar and black currant. The palate matched with medium flavors. This turned a bit sour after 2 hours. Medium finish.

3/31/2013 - BBG LONDON LIKES THIS WINE: 88 Points
Thin but still good colour. Half bottle. Needs drinking now and already way past its best.

3/16/2013 - KR66 LIKES THIS WINE: 91 Points
Great wine, dark colour, full of fruits. Mature. Long finish. Will keep many more years. Double-decanted 3 hours before drinking.

12/17/2012 - VINDICTIVE WROTE:
I agree that this wine definitely needs air. Bottle and fill were excellent, cork was wet, but extracted intact. There was a very off-putting chemical nose at the outset. This dissipated with a little air, and over the next few hours the wine straightened out into a fine, well-aged claret.

7/18/2012 - ATL WROTE:
Need to decant this wine! Cork came out mostly whole, but wet top to bottom. Initially, no nose at all - totally odorless - and very little taste. An hour in the decanter changed everything, and the wine opened up to reveal a lovely nose and beautiful complex taste that continued to grow for another hour. Ultimately, a really nice wine and the perfect pairing for veal blanquette. Would buy more, but definetely needs one or two hours to breathe, which surprised me for a 1966.
