Description

I have on offer a 45 year old bottle from this gorgeous Estate's 1970 vintage. The label is slightly faded from cellaring but everything is clearly visible. Capsule is good and ullage is low into the neck, not bad for the year!

** Robert Parker 86 Points ** The Gruaud Larose is a typically muscular 1970. It offers an attractive leathery, smoky, earthy nose. Lots of tannins and tastes of citrus fruit. Drink now -2014 Parker rating 86/100 (excellent)

This is still hanging on really well and makes a great drink, though decidedly very mature and only for those who like their wine to taste like mint, leather, and herbs. Not a whole lot of fruit here, at least not in the primary sense, but it actually retains a certain freshness. Could keep another 10+ years if you have good bottles in proper storage conditions.

3/18/2014 - BABLUES WROTE: 88 Points
Went up against a 1968 Charles Krug Cabernet and blew it away. Still some life left, but fading. Overall a great experience.

3/8/2014 - ALEX H WROTE: 89 Points
A nice powerful Bordeaux more akin to a top pauillac with leathery power and tobacco cigar cedar box. However does show filling of supple rounded plumish fruits. Finishing with a bite of licourice.

Similar to last note. A little fresher, smoother - nice mature glass of GL

was absolutely stunning, considering its age. To the average everyday wine drinker this is going to sound unappealing, but to wine geeks (like a couple around the table tonight) this wine kept changing and opening and giving different aspects of its character that were admirable: starting with Band-aid and forest floor on the nose and a bit on the palate, there were also welcome (and surprising) hints of raspberry that appeared, not strong, but subtle and appealing. No doubt the wine is very mature, but still very drinkable. The most surprising part is the acidity, which still stood up and kept the wine "fresh" or at least the palate from getting tired. The biggest and best compliment I can give this wine is that it is savoury and sexy - in its own kind of way.

VEO tasting - Mature Claret (Restaurant Bordewijk, Amsterdam, NL):
Level base of (the long) neck. Remarkably deep and youthful, typical Gruaud power and weight, could easily be mistaken for a wine from the 1980's, still a good stuffing of ripe fruit, well-structured, wonderful Saint-Julien typicity, excellent length. Impressive.

In fine form, garnet red, cassis and cedar nose and fine red fruits. Many years left though fully mature.

Bottle into the neck. Absolutely ruby to the rim with no bricking. Tannins fully resolved. Linear wine with medium-bodied fruit and a short finish. Will not go on any short lists for wine of the vintage, but delicious drinking.
