Description

One of the few non-Classified St Julien wines, but it should be!

Made by the owners of Terrey-Gros-Cailloux, the fine 1996 Hortevie exhibits a saturated, thick purple color, as well as unformed but impressive, ripe Cabernet aromas of cassis, fruit, and minerals with hints of spicy oak. The wine is medium-bodied, chewy, tannic, and well-balanced. It will be drinkable young because of its low acidity, but it will keep for 15+ years. An impressive cru bourgeois performance. Did not decant as I wanted to see how this evolved slowly in the bottle and boy was I rewarded. Hardly any signs of age, closed initially on the nose but in the mouth the fruit was just bursting to 'get at your sensory palate'. As I poured the first glass it was like a fruit bomb leaping out from the glass.....blackcurrant and damson. Great fruit to tannin balance to compliment the ensemble! Once again this stalwart of my cellar has not failed me.
