Description

One 12 bottle OWC of Chateau Angelus 2003 purchased en primeur from Bordeaux index. My tastes have changed since then and I'm selling it to free up funds to explore other regions.

A deep garnet/purple hue, almost opaque in colour. The nose seems to have closed down since I last tasted it, black cherries, a touch of liquorice and a tang of sea-salt developing with aeration struggling against a lot of toasty oak. But quite tight and without the heat of the torrid summer. A full-bodied palate, good acidity considering the vintage, though perhaps lacking the cohesion of the 2001. The tannins are just a little abrasive, especially on the back palate. The finish has a touch of black pepper and tar. Very fine for a Saint Emilion 2003 but it lacks some balance and the finish is dominated by wood. Drinking 2012-2025. Tasted July 2007. 90pts

Tannic and tarry after en primeur. Showing better at the Angelus vertical in May-05. A very ripe nose with rich plummy black fruit, cassis and blueberry. Lacks a little definition. Very plump and fat on the palate with low acidity. Tastes like a Napa wine ! Not my style. 90-92pts

Kudos to proprietor Hubert Bouard, who has been making brilliant wines at this estate since the mid- to late-1980s. A blend of 58% Cabernet Franc and 42% Merlot, the beautiful 2003 (14% alcohol; 6,500 cases produced) is somewhat tightly knit, but it reveals a perfumed nose of rose petals, blackberries, menthol, and cedar. This broad, sweet 2003's supple attack is followed by a tannic mid-section. The wine does not appear to be as dense or structured as the 2004. Given the high percentage of Cabernet Franc, it is likely to put on considerable weight in the bottle. This beauty is slightly different not only because of the torrid vintage conditions, but also because it incorporates the highest percentage of Cabernet Franc ever utilized at Angelus. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2023. 93pts
