Description

As with most vintages of this very traditional Pauillac, early tasters underestimate it, and tasting scores then rise as time goes by and the wine slowly reveals itself.

Here is Parker's note from 2008:
"Renowned Bordeaux oenologist, Denis Dubourdiu, oversees the winemaking at all of the properties owned by Philippe Casteja, which includes Batailley. Their 2005, one of the finest efforts this estate has yet produced, is backward, tannic, and almost primordial in style. Built for the long-term, it offers plenty of sweet creme de cassis fruit intermixed with smoke, cedar, and earth notes. Full-bodied and powerful, it is an old style Pauillac with well-integrated acidity as well as sweet but elevated tannins. Give it 7-8 years of bottle age, and drink it between 2015-2035."

Here is Neal Martin's note from 2012:
"Tasted at BBR’s 2005/2009 tasting in London. The 2005 Batailley has closed down a little since I last tasted it: broody dark berried fruit, leather, graphite and a ferrous accent. The palate is medium-bodied with superb freshness and vitality, fine tannins, quite feminine and lithe towards the poised finish. This is a lovely Pauillac but as I mentioned previously, it deserves at least a decade of ageing."
