Description

Three bottles of this 5th growth Pauillac; one each of the 2002, 2003 and 2005 vintages. All in pristine condition.

Neal Martin of eRobertParker has tried all of these recently at London tastings, with very positive notes as follows:

2005: Tasted at BBR’s 2005/2009 tasting in London. The 2005 Batailley has closed down a little since I last tasted it: broody dark berried fruit, leather, graphite and a ferrous accent. The palate is medium-bodied with superb freshness and vitality, fine tannins, quite feminine and lithe towards the poised finish. This is a lovely Pauillac but as I mentioned previously, it deserves at least a decade of ageing. Tasted July 2011. 93 points.

2003: A blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. A deep purple/garnet hue with a typical 2003 nose: much more fruit – plum, raspberry, dates and a touch of almond. What is pleasing is that there is no warmth of alcohol and blowsiness. The palate is full-bodied with a firm grip, saturated tannins and a bold structure. Good purity of fruit: this Batailley overcame the difficulties of the torrid summer heat and although it is not my style of Pauillac, remains fresh and inviting on the plum and blueberry-tinged finish. Very fine. Drink 2010-2018. Tasted October 2007. 91 points.

2002: Tasted at the Chateau Batailley dinner at The Square. The ’02 Batailley has a surprisingly deep colour. The nose displays good intensity and lift with blackberry, briary, sous-bois and a touch of bay leaf, all with fine delineation if lacking some vigour. With time in the glass, there are more tar and cedar-wood aromas emerging. The palate is medium-bodied but with a sinewy entry, rounded tannins, with notes of blackberry, cedar, pencil shavings and a touch of plum. The ’02 is a little foursquare, but decent weight and good focus, leading to a predictably foursquare finish. Fine. Drink now-2017. Tasted January 2010.
89 points.
