Description

Three bottles of this 5th growth Pauillac; one each from the 1989, 1998 and 2000 vintages.
All in excellent condition with levels well into neck.
Some slight scuffs on the 1989 label.

Neal Martin of eRobertParker has tasted all of these quite recently with very positive comments on two of them (hopefully he had a bad bottle of the 1998 - there are several recent very positive comments on Cellartracker for this wine...)

2000: Tasted at The Sampler’s Batailley vertical. The millennial Batailley has a similar nose to last January: very ripe and perhaps more open than its peers, with blackberry, damson, raspberries and a touch of liquorice. Generous at this early stage. The palate is very smooth on the entry, assertive tannins and as I have written before, not the most refined Pauillac of the finish, but it has a lovely burly, powerful finish that shows just a touch more structure than previous example. Very fine. Tasted January 2011. 92 points.

1998: This is very hollow on the nose and lacking some fruit concentration (it is more similar in style to the 1997.) Tobacoo and cedar-scented fruits, developing an earthy aroma with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, lacking some harmony and delineation. Slightly green tannins, but just needing more cohesion and sophistication. Linear on the finish. Good rather than great. Drink now. Tasted October 2007. 84 points.

1989: Tasted at The Sampler’s Batailley vertical. The ‘89 has a lovely bouquet with an almost Pomerol-like personality: dried herbs, sage, a touch of sloe and mocha all with good definition. The palate is medium-bodied with a savoury, dried blood tinged entry and good acidity. It is vibrant and spicy towards the gritty, tarry finish, yet it shows less vigour than the 1990 when compared alongside and it never really “takes off”. Tasted January 2011. 89 points.
