Description

As so often with Batailley, early critic appraisals are miserly - because Batailley is made in a very traditional style that takes time to reveal its charms! So Batailley will never get raved about at the en-primeur tastings, but give it a few years in bottle and see what happens...

Neal Martin tasted this in 2011 and rated it 92 points:
"Tasted at The Sampler’s Batailley vertical. The millennial Batailley has a similar nose to last January: very ripe and perhaps more open than its peers, with blackberry, damson, raspberries and a touch of liquorice. Generous at this early stage. The palate is very smooth on the entry, assertive tannins and as I have written before, not the most refined Pauillac of the finish, but it has a lovely burly, powerful finish that shows just a touch more structure than previous example. Very fine. Tasted January 2011."

"Pencil lead, orange peel, wooden chest, tobacco and a touch of liquorice and cinnamon, laden with mature blackcurrant fruit. Soft tannins (genuinely puzzled as to why others find them hard), long subtle toasty finish, this is pretty much my ideal wine. Utterly delicious, actually pretty good vfm, and always dependable, batailley has to be *the* benchmark claret."
