Description

A strategic increase in Merlot leverages the clay soils, a key factor in Chateau Bernadotte's success during the dry 2009 vintage. The vines, unstressed by climate conditions, yielded grapes of exceptional quality, resulting in a wine distinguished by power, minerality, refined tannins, and concentrated fruit. All grapes are hand-picked and extraction is kept light. The wines have historically been stored exclusively in Gironde.

Just opened another bottle, despite coming up to 17 years of age, still needed at least 2 hours decanted before it opened up. Once there, such a pleasure. With recent purchases intended for an event, some bottles remain available, offering an opportunity to acquire a fully matured Haut-Medoc/Pauillac wine, stylistically akin to Pichon Lalande, but at a lower price.

Vines average 25 years in age and are planted at a density of 6,500 per hectare. Harvests are performed by machine. Vinification occurs in 23 large, temperature-controlled stainless-steel vats, with malolactic fermentation taking place in tank. Chateau Bernadotte wines are aged in 30% new French oak barrels for 12 to 18 months, depending on vintage quality and character. The estate produces appr. 20,000 cases annually.

A second label, Le Fournas Bernadotte, is also produced by the estate. Chateau Bernadotte derives its name from Marshal Bernadotte, a former proprietor who was appointed Sovereign Prince by Napoleon and later ascended to the Swedish throne as King Charles XIV John due to the absence of an heir. The current Swedish royal family are direct descendants of the Bernadotte lineage.

Originally known as Chateau Fournas, the estate adopted the name Chateau Bernadotte in 1997 following its acquisition by Madame de Lencquesaing from Swedish industrialist Curt Eklund. Eklund had purchased the property in 1973, including 10 hectares of Pauillac vines. Madame de Lencquesaing, owner of Chateau Pichon Lalande in Pauillac, integrated the Pauillac vineyards obtained with the estate into Pichon Lalande the year after acquisition. Subsequently, she undertook comprehensive renovations of the Chateau Bernadotte, modernizing the chateau, vat rooms, grape reception area, and cellars. The number of vats increased to 23, enabling vinification in thermoregulated vats on a parcel-by-parcel basis for the first time. Extensive improvements and replanting were carried out in the vineyards, notably increasing the proportion of Merlot from 36% to 44%, which contributed to enhancing the wine’s softness and roundness.

In 2007, Roederer Champagne house acquired Chateau Pichon Comtesse de Lalande in Pauillac, along with Chateau de Pez and Haut Beausejour in St. Estephe, from Madame de Lencquesaing. Plans are underway to gradually increase the presence of Petit Verdot. The terroir features gravel and sand with clay subsoils on sloping hillsides rising to 31 meters at their highest point.
